New Jersey man convicted of sexually abusing sleeping woman on plane
Quote: A New Jersey man was convicted Friday of sexually abusing a woman while she slept during a 2012 airline flight, the U.S. district attorney's office said.
Bawer Aksal, 49, of North Bergen was convicted of one count of sexual abuse and one count of abusive sexual contact following a five-day trial in federal court. The jury in Newark deliberated seven hours before returning its guilty verdicts, according to a statement from the federal prosecutor's office.
Aksal was arrested in August 2012 when he arrived aboard a flight from Phoenix, Arizona, to Newark Liberty International Airport. According to the statement, Aksal was sitting in the middle seat in a row of three seats, while the victim was next to him in the window seat.
The incident took place about an hour before landing, when the aisle passenger looked to his right and saw Aksal "half into the victim's seat, with his body against the victim's. His right arm around the back of her and his left hand beneath a sweater that was draped over her."
The victim awoke to find Aksal's hands insider her shirt and shorts, and she struggled out of his grasp, the prosecutor's statement said.
Both the aisle passenger and the victim immediately headed to the back of the plane to report what happened to the flight attendants.
The federal government has exclusive jurisdiction over all sexual abuse cases that occur on U.S. flights, as such events are outside the jurisdiction of any state.
Aksal now faces a maximum sentence of life in prison and a $250,000 fine.
"Mr. Aksal is very disappointed," Aksal's attorney, Robert J. Degroot. told CNN after the verdict. "He felt that the trial presented evidence that did not meet the necessary burden. He has faith in the American system and he feels that he will ultimately be vindicated."
Aksal is scheduled to be sentenced in court on October 23.

Yes, what he did was wrong and should be punished, but life in prison and 250,000 dollar fine? I can take a crowbar, go up to a random member of this forum, assault them with the weapon until they're crippled and need urgent medical attention and get off with a much less severe punishment.
Ridiculous. Women = gold, Men = festering shit left out in the sun.

When I’ve visited places in the US and abroad with low levels of sex crimes, the women were much easier to meet and progress with, and the interactions were way more comfortable and enjoyable. I recommend seeking these kinds of places out in your local areas.
There was at least one eyewitness to Aksal’s crime in a setting with lots of people, so we can be sure he’s guilty. Aside from what he’s done to the woman, the bigger picture is that he’s a disgrace to men everywhere and is cockblocking the rest of us by making women more defensive than a feminist ever could.

This is the worst possible solution to the problem you can come up with. Let us consider a criminal faced with several options. He wants to grope a woman and also wants to avoid jail. If you set the penalty of groping a woman the same as the penalty handed out for KILLING a woman, a certain percentage of the criminals are going to try to avoid jailtime by killing the girl they would have otherwise groped in order to avoid leaving a witness. The same is true with rape. Setting the penalty to life in prison for rape is going to turn more rapes into murders.

And in the India gang rape thread your opinion was:

Violent rape is bad, but it’s not like she was murdered or had her house burned to the ground. As I see it, a woman getting raped by three men isn’t much different from a guy getting beat up by three men and suffering minor injuries. The only real difference is that people don’t often enjoy getting beat up.
Unless there was a gun put to her head or she was forced/tricked into taking dangerous hard drugs, a typical sentence for rape should only be a few weeks or months, definitely not longer than a year unless, again, a murder threat was involved. It certainly isn't worth the risk of ruining innocent men's lives.
A common question is how your feelings would change if a female family member were raped, but it doesn’t make a difference. Men are overprotective of their female loved ones and often don’t want to believe that she may have enjoyed it or that it wasn’t really that big of a deal. Hell, most men, myself included, could get violent over even an insult toward his wife, mother, daughter, or sister, but that doesn't justify rape hysteria and how it's affected our justice system.
I could understand a woman staying upset over this for a long period of time if she were a virgin waiting for her wedding night, but this was probably just a 30-year-old slut traveling alone in search of a “doesn’t count” Indian notch.
I brought this up on the thread about false rape accuser Tucker Reed, who began experiencing this “emotional distress” a year later after coming to the conclusion that she had been raped. This sort of example hints that rape-trauma could largely be from social conditioning.
According to the study cited in this article by Paul Elam, “57% of women who were raped on college campuses reported feelings that were described as ‘positive’ and ‘satisfied,’ about the experience,” and that “38% of the respondents reported a desire to repeat the experience, some obsessively so.”
As many as 21 percent of women who claimed to have been raped admit to having at least one orgasm during the experience, and researchers have hypothesized that the real figure is probably higher due to the embarrassment and denial of having enjoyed the attack.
These are the “traumatizing and life-changing attacks” that are getting men sentenced to over 10 years in maximum-security prisons.

RE: New Jersey man convicted of sexually abusing sleeping woman on plane
In the Netherlands there's a public discussion in sentences that are way too low. And in some cases it is shocking indeed.
From Elsevier Wrote:'Often community service for murder and rape'
Murderers and rapists are too often sentenced to community service instead of jail time. Last year, 54 rapists were sentenced to community service, without a proper reason. In addition, 10 convicted murderers got away with community service only. This is reported by Zembla.
Too be honest, it is very easy to become enraged without knowing the details of the case. But they report that it includes 54 counts of actual rape. What the fuck. No circumstances can make that any less bad. Kill the perpetrator. A total of 883 counts of sex crimes was punished with community service. Beyond belief.
Still, we have low rates of violent crime, rape and murder.
Personally, actual rape that is proven beyond any doubt, deserves capital punishment.
Groping some old broad on a plane not, obviously, but is not okay and deserves to be punished.
