Do tablets typically wear out? There are going to be a lot of them around in three or four years, and if they can play video there may not be a huge impetus to keep upgrading.

This is the problem with PCs too. I got a mac mini 7 years ago and it's still going strong. The difference in computing power between 1999 and 2006 was huge. From 2006 to 2013 what constituted a mid range PC barely moved.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the massive re-org MS did a few weeks ago:

MS is going to be around for a long time but as others have mentioned they're probably going to turn into another IBM.

This is exactly why tablets have seemed to supplant PCs in the last few years. The media's missing this with all their hyped-up stories about the death of the PC. It's not that people don't use desktop and notebook computers anymore. It's just that the people buying tablets already have perfectly good PCs and don't need to replace them.
