You kidding me? I could see the argument for Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain or Lew Alcindor ... or maybe even Larry Legend or Magic ... but Doc was an icon and probably the most beloved player in the sport. He changed the game in so many ways on and off the court and was known as the "ambassador" of the NBA after also having that role in the ABA.

BTW, there is a bit of PeeWee Kirkland in the part about the Rucker League. PeeWee turned down an NBA contract because he was making more money selling drugs in Harlem than he would have as a player during that time. He is a school yard legend.

As I said, one could definitely make an argument for Magic. When Magic was still in college, he went and stayed with Doc to get advice about turning pro. Magic and Bird got their shoe contracts with Converse after Doc J laid the foundation. Doc was the draw for the ABA merger with the NBA.

Sure he was beloved and was an ambassador but how does that make him a better player than Jordan?

Objectively Kobe is not the best player in the league right now. He is still an elite offensive player and definitely a top 5-10 player in this league right now which is amazing given that he is about to turn 35 soon. Right now LeBron, Durant, CP3, and I would even put Parker here, are much better than him.

I'm a huge kobe fan but I wouldn't agree he's the best in the league right now, lebron had him beat. Do I think kobe will go down as and end his career better than lebron, yes. Is kobe currently better than lebron? No. I will say he was at his prime though.

It doesn't matter if he was an icon. We are talking about, if you put a player on the court amongst the best of all players, who dominates them all?
They say Wilt was one of the greatest players of all time but he was playing a bunch of scrubs back then. I rate Kobe's 81 point versus the Raptors as one of the greatest offensive display in modern sports since Kobe is only 6'6 and playing legit players.

Wilt was playing a bunch of scraggly cats..with a handful of solid athletes (and I do mean handful) hence he was able to score 100 points while shooting free throws like a child in the sandpit.

Doc J had great class and a great afro but to call him the best of all time is way off.

The Raptors? Yeah, I forgot what a great defensive team they were. The Raptors weren't even in the league when Doc played.

Doc, in his prime, would have destroyed Kobe. He was about the same height, but much stronger and jumped higher and with more hang time. He would have been dunking on Kobe at will. Physically, Doc was closer to someone like Lebron James at Kobe's height.

Dunking on people don't mean shyt..Vince would embarass all mentioned with aerial assaults and I don't rank Vince nowhere.

Doc was an ambassador but not the greatest player of all time by far (old travel from one end of the court and jump from the foul line without flair having ass...)

Doc took the entire NBA game to the next level by incorporating the kind of ball brothas played in the school yard. MJ took Doc's game to the next level. Kobe has tried to emulate MJ, but hasn't made it to MJ's level. Lebron is Magic-like, but I'd go with Magic.

I agree with Moma. We're talking about best player here, not most iconic. Figuratively speaking, Jordan could have not done a damn thing for the nba or anyone else other than play ball and he still would have been the best. It doesn't matter what you've done it's how you've played. I also agree with Moma on the whole wilt/kobe argument and I make the same argument all the time. Wilt was just on another level against the people he was playing. If you put him in the league today he'd be a Dwight Howard. Yeah he'd be good, but wouldn't go down as one of the best players in history.

There are plenty of non-exciting players in the league today. Either way, you can't fault a player for the era he played in. A guy can't control the world he is given.

Like baseball players that take riods and hit a lot of homers compared to guys that did it differently and not as frequently, times change and standards change.
