Marriage is/was a de facto tax on unmarried people. Why were these flamers not shrieking about separating church and state, instead of wanting in on something (marriage) that they would otherwise deem an instrument of the heteronormative Judeo-Christian patriarchy?

Oh yeah, it's because they just want to act outraged and indulge in some victim-complex attention whoring, not because they actually want consistent principles and equal opportunity.

Practically, getting married will make it easier for a gay couple to adopt. Also, if you are straight and married, and you die, your spouse inherits everything. If you are gay and have the same type of partnership, and you die, the state gets everything.

Is it getting overkilled on facebook? absolutely.

I think those of you arguing that this paves the way for polygamy are off base. By the same thinking, if any two people can get married, that means brother and sister, father and son, etc... you get my drift. The DOMA decision boils down to a public policy decision, as so many other cases do, that don't have laws to back them up. For example, in a residential lease, you cannot disclaim the landlord's personal liability if someone slips and falls etc... In theory, landlord and tenant should be able to negotiate a contract that takes this into account. But no, illegal because it is repugnant to public policy. You are never going to get the Supreme Court or legislators to say polygamy or incest is in the interest of public policy.

Marriage is a revenue generator for the state. It is also a contributor to GDP (Think expensive weddings and everybody buying presents). Homosexuals are the highest earning subgroup, and have the highest amount of disposable income. Is it curious at all that the state wants to encourage as many marriages as possible?

A lot of us here are libertarians, and we don't care what goes on behind closed doors. What is upsetting is taking this to the next level, and essentially promoting homosexuality as wonderful, fabulous, and perfectly normal, including to young children in public schools.

^ I think what we're doing here is arguing about "mortality" of the situation. That's what the debate has been based on. Both sides have been arguing that their position is the "moral" position - antis saying that this destroys the traditional foundation of marriage and is repungent and pros saying it is hateful and anti-love to be against gay marriage. Very little of the discussion of whether gay marriage should be allowed has been based on the legal issues it would create such as polygamous couples getting divorced or revenue to the state.

The people who are making the argument that allowing gay marriage destroys any sort of barriers in front of polygamy are talking about it in "moral" and logical terms. The sort of moral and legal reasoning used to justify gay marriage (that what is going on between consenting adults should not be interfered with outside parties) can also be used to justify polygamy and I cannot think of any logical reason why it would allow apply to gay marriage and not polygamy.

The national cathedral in Washington DC rang the bells to celebrate gay marriage.

Now I understand why secular humanists are in favor of gay marriage, but how hipocritical do you have to be to support it if you are religious? If you are going to pick and choose in a capricious manner what where God is right or wrong then why not just stop being religious? They are the ones that annoy me the most in this debate.

The National Cathedral is a Episcopalian church and the Episcopal Church is pretty supportive of gay marriage. They have gay priests (and female ones) and at one point they even had a gay bishop.

Obama is now over in Africa telling leaders that they need to support gay rights. Maybe it's none of our damn business what Africans think of gays. And this trip is costing tax payers $100 million.

Well, last night at a dance some gay came up to me and asked for a dance. That's the first time it's ever happened to me. Before most gays would have stuck to other gays, but now that DOMA has been repealed they know they've been totally empowered.

I came up with a good excuse not to dance with him, but I realize that going forward that dancing with a gay will show me to be progressive and cool. I may have no choice but to accept at some point in the future.

It's amazing how fast the culture is changing because of this ruling. This ruling is as big as Roe v. Wade.

Our tax dollars at work. Maybe someone could correct me since I know very little about African laws, but in the Middle East, "gay rights" means legalizing homosexuality instead of making it punishable by imprisonment or death. In the US, gays weren't, to quote every feminist windbag I've ever met, able to participate in an outdated patriarchical institution set up to reenforce gender stereotypes.

Episcopalian Church fracture
(06-27-2013 01:11 PM)Wutang Wrote:  The National Cathedral is a Episcopalian church

Keep in mind the Episcopalian church is the American branch of the Church of England. You know, the church started by Henry VIII and currently headed by Queen Elizabeth II? That's who's behind the National Cathedral in Washington DC.

(06-27-2013 01:11 PM)Wutang Wrote:  Episcopal Church is pretty supportive of gay marriage. They have gay priests (and female ones) and at one point they even had a gay bishop.

The gays taking over part of the Episcopalian church and trying to shove normalizing their sexuality down congregation's throats has been a massive failure that has literally split the Episcopalian church in half. What's being proven time and time again is that wherever there are gays in leadership the pews empty, donations are decimated, and the church has to be closed and sold off. How many times can you listen to a sermon delivered with a swishy lisp or bulldyke growl? The congregations were initially all "we're so proud we're so open minded, we're so progressive", or just intimidated from speaking out. But congregants stopped attending service a few months after each gay takeover, taking their pocket books with them. It eventually became clear there was no faster way to kill off a church and shutter the doors than to elect gay leadership.

Today, the Anglican/Episcopalian congregations remaining recognize that gay takeovers shutter doors. Either they have to fight off gay takeovers, as "unprogressive" as that may be, or see their church close as everyone runs for the doors. The gay bishop was eventually unelected, but the rot and disintegration to faith communities that happens when gays take over and the closing of churches that results is now openly recognized. Nine year later the split continues, and it has been extremely nasty and prolonged.

Also interesting are whole Anglican/Episcopalian congregations that are splitting and joining the Catholic church to avoid the gays. Their priests are in their own whole order with their own separate right under the Pope, and importantly, are allowed to marry nor are required to celibate.

And Epsilons are still worse. They're too stupid to be able to read or write. Besides they wear black, which is such a beastly color. I'm so glad I'm a Beta."

Stranger yet is the media's silence on the voting rights act getting the kabosh by the Supremes. It seems they're too busy doing the electric slide in the streets to notice.

Why would they talk about that when gay is the new black?

You'll notice that the media, already passionately pro-gay before the ruling, has basically abandoned the pretense of impartiality since the Supreme Court's decision. The line is that this is a civil rights revolution and that the debate is over.

Across the board the media is treating this as equivalent to a new Brown v. Board of Education. The 5-4 decision has given the press carte blanche to come out of the closet.

I wonder about this. I just walked home from the gym and these two queens walked past me walking with their arms around each other, one with the hand on the other's ass. One of them was switching his hips in such an exaggerated way that I've never even seen a woman strut like that. This was down a main busy boulevard. City hall has been doing things with projected colored lights on it at night for different events like the Symphony Opening for some time now. All this week they've been trying to drum up support for the money losing Pride Parade. Whatever genuineness of it is long gone. It's now just a bunch of corporate sponsor booths for Wells Fargo, Bud Light, and Virgin Airlines with a thin veneer of rainbows on top, but few actual gays, and then only highly sanitized ones (ie low paid public affairs people happy to earn overtime for working a Saturday in a booth handing out keychains for their corporate overlords). That's why they moved it from the Castro several miles away over to City Hall. So the tourists won't actually see real gay behavior (No cruising and staring at mens' crotches for instance) that might make tourists uncomfortable. There will be tons of bridge-and-tunnel pennyless college student herbs with their herby girlfriends in matching rainbow clothes (rainbows are also popular with Grateful Dead fans, and there's some definite confusion between the two groups) that will come because it's cheap and they'll get to pretend they're progressive because they saw a few clowns/drag queens in a sanitized environment.

Overall it's a poor waste of a Saturday morning that I highly recommend avoiding.

Here we go. And btw, Samseau's slippery slope comment couldn't be more true. You are seeing it here. Gays are now suing bakeries that don't make cakes for same-sex weddings:

http://www.worldmag.com/2013/06/another_...ding_cakes

These are private businesses. They have a right to make cakes for whoever the fuck they want. The gay rights movement, feminists and the cultural left in general is totalitarian. If you don't subscribe to their approved social convictions, they will actively seek to destroy you and your business. Now I'm a black man if you guys don't know. If a bakery didn't want to make cakes for black couples, well then let them. There's plenty of bakeries that will accept my business. Who the fuck am I to tell someone who they can make cakes for.

This part is chilling:

Quote:The complaint seeks to force Masterpiece Cakeshop to “cease and desist” the practice of refusing to make wedding cakes for same-sex couples while telling the public that their business is open to everyone. If owner Jack Phillips loses the case and refuses to comply with the order, he could face fines of $500 per case and up to a year in jail, his attorney said.

These motherfuckers would like to see a man go to jail because he doesn't support same sex marriage.

People just need to get over it. They also need to quit throwing around, polygamy, bestiality, and whatever else they claim around as an inevitably of gay marriage. It's not, so it's irrelevant. Ok, we get it, you don't like gays.

I agree; the PC-feminist complex has crossed its inflection point a long time ago; that is, its advancement has been slowing. It's a matter of whether it's hit its critical point yet in terms of its advancement receding. Or if it will ever hit such a point in the near-to-medium future.

Sorry to be a downer but I don't think feminism is going anywhere. Feminism is now default in the West. The next step is feminism spreading into other more traditional places like Latin America, Asia and E. Europe. These women like American women will start to value career over family and start having slut walks and talking about rape culture and how they make less than men, blah blah...

The best case scenario is that it will be contained to the West and not spread much further.

I would keep an eye out on Norway and other Norther European countries to get a glimpse into the future of where feminism might go. Seems like there's been a backlash against feminism in Norway this exemplified by that documentary that was put up by that Norwegian actor showing how crazy feminism has gotten in the academic world there. And hasn't there been a big de-funding of women's studies programs and the like as a result of that documentary?

Ya it's pretty sickening, the feminists and sociologists basically reject all biology. If you want to look at the future of the West look no farther than Scandinavia.
