I grew up in the Bronx/Brooklyn/Lower East Side during that era. It was just horrible, none of that bullying where people just called you names. Somebody did not like you for whatever reason, you needed to do something about it. Living in terror every day but couldn't show it because if you did you were toast. Scared shitless that somebody would run up on me and give me "a buck fifty." Cops beating the living shit out of you if you even looked at them wrong, the poverty, the literally govt cheese, female friends getting "legitimately raped", crack heads walking like zombies, bitches not giving head. I don't miss those times at all. Young bucks growing up today even in a shit hole like Brownsville, East NY, South Side Queens have no idea how good they have it.

It was really a dog eat dog world. Am I the only one who thinks things are actually getting better? I wish I would have been born 10-15 years later...

I don't think you can even explain how bad it was down there back in the 80s. If you had to go in it was locked and loaded no mercy.

As far as the video goes in nice places it was like that but there was a dark side in bad areas. Gun play was the norm. I was temporarily involved with a sportbike war in Bridgeport CT which was like the Bronx in some parts if you were white and drove in you were dead unless you had a street drug dealer protecting your entrance. With the bikes, crazy fucks would run out in the street with baseball bats and knock you off when riding then take it. After that you'd have to go get it back with firepower or basically find who was riding it and jack them at gun point or shoot them. With stolen cars they didn't want to give back nor did the cops care you had to steal it back again with a group of dudes with guns holding shit down while you recover the car or whatever. This shit got old. I knew it was only a matter of time before I got shot especially since we were all wasted with guns pulling them out in bars all the time.

Things generally were like that in 1987 -- at least in the nicer areas. They still are in a lot of places in the South. It makes me think of certain convenience stores along the highways in these parts -- regardless of culture, race, etc., people hold the doors for each other going in and out, and the staff is always friendly and helpful.

Though for the sake of argument, having a video camera pointed at you in 1987 was still somewhat of a novelty, so reactions varied from amusement to indifference. Today, one might receive a much more volatile reaction when being taped by a stranger (and I cannot blame them).

This. Which is why I think people should focus on enjoying the present rather than romanticizing the past. Because people 25 years from now will be talking about how awesome the 2010s were. Quoted for truth! People always seem to be nostalgic for the past. Here's the thing they forget; when people say back then things used to be better, what is always true is that they were younger back then. So of course it's better to be in your twenties than in your forties.

And btw, however charming that video might be, it is not rare to have such experiences regularly in today's America. People really need to get out more.

I bet none of those people in that video had crushing credit card debt, an upside down mortgage, an overfinanced car, or ate fast food more than two times per week. Nowadays almost everyone has one or more of the above problems. I believe that makes a huge difference.

I sometimes wonder if white knighting isn't just a hold over from a more dangerous time.

There was a time when women needed protection from legitimate physical threats. Ten years ago I'd have watched a woman's back if it looked like something shady was about to happen - because sometimes real dirt actually happened.

Now that those threats are gone, white knights rush to defend women from fake threats.

Nah, my town wasn't really a place where girls were in any danger. No one got raped and "date rape" was unheard of.

My town was mostly white. So you didn't have much "real" crime.

I got into a lot of fights, as there was a large white trash contingent. But if I had been born to a better family, that stuff would have escaped me to. A lot of my friends had pretty ideal childhoods with lots of toys and no violence.

Most of North America's cities (Canada included) were rotting carcases, with broken inner city/downtown cores, Latin American levels of crime, crack epidemic, far more racial tension, economic uncertainty for the lower middle classes, and the offshoring of the massive industrial sector from the midwest.

Outside of the USA/Europe/Japan the world was in chaos. The cold war, Iron Curtain (no east European pussy paradise access), Africa's endless coups/counter coups/civil wars, brutal Asian poverty levels, dictators murdering civilians in Latin America, civil wars, restriction of movement and travel, etc etc.

Another thing about the 80s. A few of us were getting all the pussy so if you were beta you might get one girl but no way you were rolling in it. Also there was no online shit to fall back on or cowardly texts to hide behind. You had to find parties by hunting or by getting invited if popular or crash them.

Although I like to make fun of a typical American things like soccer,traffic,their illogical measurement systems and sometimes politics I can honestly say that I find Americans to be super friendly.

I've been back in the States for two weeks now and I haven't met any people who treated me bad. People will seriously go out of their way to help me with directions and behavior in stores and public transport is apologetic to the extreme. You will not find this behavior much in my country where people are way less friendly and way more crass and aggressive.

I am sure the guys on the video didn't think to themselves ''look how sweet and feminine the french girl is'' and they didn't think that because the american women were equally as friendly.

Pussy was way easier back in the 80s for westerners. Brazil? Walk in the park, Ritchie (an english singer that moved to Brazil during the 70s, 80s) was swimming in pussy back then, an english guy that could speak fluent portuguese back in those years and was one of the most popular singers in Brazil, imagine how he was killing. Even the locals who had above average money were killing it, imagine a foreigner with some coin ( i am sure we have few westerners on here that visited Brazil during those years)
