Ideas For A New Hobby?
I need a new hobby - any of ya'll got any interesting hobbies?

I have been collecting old coins and bills - got a nickel from 1908 & a ten dollar bill from 1952. However, it isn't a hobby that will give me serious enjoyment.

I will admit I already read alot, lift, play basketball, play video games (not so much anymore) and explore local small towns - looking for local restaurants, bars and any niche stores in the country.

Take up a social dance, I'd recommend swing Dancing, ideally lindy hop. Has obvious game benefits, open access to skinny dancer girls who tend to be way prettier and more interesting than average. The cardio from dance will compliment your current lifting routine, and as you start attending more social dances your wardrobe will improve dramatically to fit the sharp style of the era. Search for Samseau's post about it on ROK.

I'm a big proponent of learning a martial art(s), it's fun, interesting, challenging, good exercise, you learn discipline, respect, and it's good to be confident you can defend yourself if need be.

Other than that, I guess it'd be stating the obvious to recommend weight lifting on this forum, but for me those are pretty much my main two hobbies, outside of travel.

If you can afford it, travel and learning new languages are right up there with some of the best hobbies IMO.

RE: Ideas For A New Hobby?
I personally feel like the best hobbies do more for you than just make the passing time more interesting.

For instance, do something that is fun but also gets you in shape, like martial arts as suggested by the Original Gangster.

Or start a hobby that makes you money or has the potential to do so - like a website project, learning to invest, or writing a book. I do realize many hobbies are good for the brain even if they don't have immediate rewards (language-learning and music, for instance), but it looks like you've already got some bases covered with your other hobbies, so a business-related venture, even if on a very small scale, might be the best way to go at the moment.

I'm Here.

To be your own man is a hard business. If you try it, you'll be lonely often, and sometimes
frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." - Kipling

Play guitar or chess?
That's the two things I'm learning right now and I'm loving it.
They're both really cheap and fun while being challenging.

Free guitar course

Play and learn chess online

RE: Ideas For A New Hobby?
While I know there is an element of personal improvement and logical thinking that is beneficial as a man, however with that said, chess is a dead game. The greatest players in the world are now unable to defeat deep blue, as such chess is no longer the pinnacle of strategy it used to be.

Personally I aim to give all my endeavours my best and would prefer to take up a hobby that has a purpose. If a strategy game is really what you're after why not take up poker? At least it's a living game and has potential to be a sideline money maker, as well as opening you to casino girls through tournaments. Will have the same benefits of personal discipline and logic.

While I agree with you Statsi, I think there is a big difference between chess and poker.
Poker depends on luck, the cards your are dealt. Even the best players can't win a major tournament if they are ever only dealt shit.
In chess you make your own luck, you learn a lot of skills while playing as well.
I enjoy playing both

Skydiving.

Good people. Drop zones turn into big ass parties when the sun goes down. It's pretty addictive. As far as making you money, it will do the opposite.

Anything that gets you out in the great outdoors, fresh air and sunshine are great to clear your head every once in a while.
I personally am an avid mountain biker I also occasionally go out rock climbing with some friends although its a total bitch to organize and set up. For me there are not many things better than reaching to top of a mountain looking out over the view and knowing that you have an awesome downhill ride to get back.

Of course as with everything to experience the good you need to put yourself through the bad, Namely rain and cold and WIND.

Archery. Theres tons of leagues and communities to join and the skill is very difficult to master.

RE: Ideas For A New Hobby?
Yeah I can dig that chess has the appeal of being totally cerebral, I just don't like games that you can't really progress your life through. The reason I no longer play chess is the same reason I no longer play computer games, even if you dedicate your life to it you probably won't make gains in the areas of life you care about. If cutting it from your life doesn't harm you and gives you more time to be productive and actively pursue your dreams then you should make the cut.

Obviously if you have some innate aptitude and can become a grand master or a starcraft playing rock star then by all means. Though I'd still think you'd be closer to being who you want to be by practicing more productive pursuits that have a much better return on investment.

Great thread.

Maybe rock climbing, MMA, yoga, competitive running.

These are hobbies I've been meaning to do myself.

Learning close-up magic is the best hobby in the world.

Also - philosophy is great. Since there are so many avenues to go down.

The best thing is to try everything out.
Once you found something you like, master it and then go on to the next thing.

I'd take up ballroom dancing or tango. It's well known that dancing is probably one of the best ways to increase brainpower (bakedesuyo has me on this one) and it's how men and women judge each other sexually. Dancing well is probably one of the best ways to increase night game.

Automotive Repair. Your checking account will thank you.

I'm trying to get into it myself. My only issue is I don't have a garage, nor will I for the foreseeable future.

Not an option for me.. my cameras get fucked up or stolen about every 1.5-2 years.

RE: Ideas For A New Hobby?
Getting into amateur film is always a fun and rewarding hobby. You have to scout talent, own a decent camera, an older copy of final cut pro, and probably a mac desktop but the game potential here is basically limitless if you spend the time to write a script and brainstorm good ideas. It's possible to make it big (like the guy who came up with Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow but managed to fuck up that opportunity, sadly enough) and go from amateur film to scratching out a living selling screenplays or even being a director. Decent dialogue-driven film has never been cheaper to film and edit 'professionally'.

I have been playing guitar for the last couple years, don't play guitar. It's a great instrument but what you should do instead is learn to play drums. Learn drums for 6-8 months and then get into a band. Don't worry even if you suck you probably won't be kicked out because drummers are a dime a dozen. If you are a good drummer then you can get into nearly any band in your area, good drummers come by once every green moon.
