I wonder if Xavier went at it less aggressively (complemented his dad on his strengths versus drawing hard lines in the sand intervention style), if he could have brought down some of X's defenses. I'm sure that style works with people that understand their substance use is a negative coping mechanism. X is/was not ready to face that.

I routinely see kids side with their mother after she completely fucks over their father in a divorce.
