RE: Why do men get married?
(05-18-2013 06:26 PM)speakeasy Wrote: Besides, we all know marriage is the bedrock of civilization and without it, fertility rates would plunge and such societies are ultimately self-annihilating. That's basically what's happening in blue state cities in America and in places like Scandinavia. Low marriage rates, low fertility rates, emphasis on personal freedom, and living for one's own pleasure which ultimate means a population that is vanishing off the face of the earth. A woman has from about 18-30 to play that lifestyle, for men, maybe a bit longer. To be perfectly honest, I could never even consider seriously dating a woman who didn't believe in marriage and family. To me that's the essence of what a woman is all about.
I would disagree and say that marriage is a by-product of the real bedrock of civilization, which is agriculture.
Besides, I am glad to see a reduction in birth rates in some countries as, in case you haven't noticed, we are fucking this place up, and it's only going to get worse.
Let's see how a population of ten billion do when we bleed this planet dry and billions of people are forced into migration from coastal communities.

At some point, it's about higher, nobler things, like taking care of the grandchildren, preparing them for life, making sure they are equipped to navigate the joys and sorrows they will encounter in their future. Once the wife hits the wall, the man's sexual desire can be sated by young, sexy mistresses or escorts. No need to break the marriage.
Marriage is about children. Not about love, not about recreational sex, not about "rights", and certainly not about "benefits". So, when love and sex are no longer part of the marriage, that's fine just as long as both parties realize that it's all about the children and, later, all about the children's children. Things evolve.
Now, why would a man want to get married unless he wants to procreate? I have absolutely no idea.

Quote:And to my eye there is no difference between being stuck with an androgenous woman than it would be to be married to a bloke.
Your right between wearing the same clothing (jeans and a t-shirt) and the fact that older women(plus 50 years old) usually chop off their hair the couples do look the same.

The funny thing is at least in the US kids often move to other parts of the country for school/work after they turn 18 and as a result often only see their parents on holidays once or twice a year. This is why I really believe the staying together for the kids arguement only makes sense while the kids are growing up.

Then you have 20 years to be totally alone and watch your friends die one by one.
Every 18 year old you look at or hold the door for will think of you as that creepy old dude.
There will literally be nothing to live for at that age if you don't have children or grandchildren.
You can move to Thailand and do all that at 50.
Bingo. This is the reality that so many who make these arguments fail to account for.
All of what ghostdog said is absolutely true...for Americans (and for men elsewhere in the west, particularly the Anglosphere where age-gap shaming is at its worst).
If you remove yourself from that frame, you open up a larger number of options.
The catch, of course, is that few people seem able to do this. They can't imagine themselves leaving the frame established for them in the western anglosphere. Not to pick on him, but look at ghostdog here: he's a 9 month veteran on a forum whose foundation is built upon the idea of international travel, and even his thoughts remain strictly in line with the western/anglosphere frame.
ghostdog is, by default, more aware than about 99% of western men. If he can't do it, then you can bet that few others can. For this massive cohort of western manhood, all that ghostdog said will be true.
Know your enemy and know yourself, find naught in fear for 100 battles. Know yourself but not your enemy, find level of loss and victory. Know thy enemy but not yourself, wallow in defeat every time.
