I've heard really mixed things about that place, but I do plan on going there this upcoming winter when I do Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. It sounds like it's totally geared towards backpacker tourists, which have kind of taken over the town, but the area around there is amazing beautiful. Also, about the "happy bars" where you can order "special" shakes and pizzas with weed or mushrooms, but apparently they play the cheesy American TV show "Friends" constantly, which for me might make a bad trip. I wonder what the scene for hooking up is like, I'd imagine there would be lots of European and Aussie backpacker girls, who would be doing lot's of drinking/partying, not always a bad situations. So are you going to get your Laotian flag? I hear they have a 500 dollar fine if some how you get caught, and they can kick you out of the country.

It totally is but the tubing on the mekong is amazing. Just an amazing party.

Yes but you can get that anywhere in Cambodia or Laos.

This is not a town to get your Laos flag. Its a backpacker party town centred around the tubing scene but the party and atmos is amazing.

The $500 fine does not apply if you are staying in a guesthouse. Only if you go to a private home. I guest the hotels and guesthouse pay bribes.

I second that. I was in vang vieng about 6 years ago and it's still one of my favorite places in the world. An absolute gem.

Love the place, a backpacker haven and tubing down the Nam Song river with a beer in hand is one of the best things I've done. You can chat with some of the locals who work in the bars and restaurants but I don't think many of them will hook up with you, too much trouble for them if they do and for you. You don't want to mess with the police there.

Tubing is one of the best things I have ever done. Well worth a visit, you won't regret it.

I banged a Laotian chick in my hotel. I think the fine only applies to private homes and not if you take her to a hotel. I think hotels and guesthouses are except but, as always, double check when you are there.

I heard about it, but I thought it is a myth, as travel.state.gov says:

That's some creepy shit I'd say. Of course, as usual it is more about the law enforcement, not the law itself.
