Outsourcing Digital Media and Video Editing/Production
-

I am a huge fan of VICE media, especially their unique and immersionist documentaries.

I'm considering doing something similar myself.

Is anyone here into digital media, video production, video editing, etc?

Also, is anyone outsourcing this type of work?

If so, what has your experience been like? What are the best countries to outsource to and how much do various deliverables cost?

Any feedback you could provide woud be immensely useful, thank you.

I produce stuff, but you have to have boots on the ground to film something. Obviously if you have something in Columbia you want to film, you can't outsource it to Indian contractors.

Lodging and travel costs for crew is the killer expense. Pretty good cameras are cheap now. If you are going to give each person their own hotel room it adds up very quickly.

One thing I've done is rent a whole vacation house and cook the food there for cast/crew and also have like 8 people staying there. It's more fun and MUCH less expensive because you don't have to go to restuarants.

My feel is I'm probably too expensive for someone looking to outsource production.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm thinking if I operate mostly out of emerging markets then I can get local contract crews for fairly cheap. Thoughts on that?

It's the production/editing outsourcing I'm thinking of outsourcing, more so.
