Going on from a post earlier about players not known as the best - Fernando Redondo, what a dream fucking midfielder. He did what Keane, Viera and Zidane could do all at the same time as one player, there's not been a complete midfielder like that since.
Alvaro Recoba, just liked him for his wand of a left foot.
Guti, he looks like a right homo, real playboy and I remember Real Madrid released a compilation video of their greatest assists, 8 out of the 10 were made by Guti. (look for his 2 backheel assists)
Steve McMananaman, this dude was fucking crazy at dribbling, just wish he knew how to pass and shoot

Zidane in 2006.

The form of those players at that time during the tournament was exceptional.
Forlan pulled stunning goals out of his ass to take Uruguay to the semis.
Zidane carried a very average French side to the finals.
Ronaldo made up for 1998 with his deciding goals in the tournament, especially in the finals against the strongest German side in years.
Thinking back on 1998, when I was too young to even remember details, my father always told me about how the semi finals Brazil vs Holland was the best game in the entire world cup, and up there for best in history. If I recall correctly, the french has some trouble coming out of their group.
And quality wise, yes, incredible players. But having a good team isn't just about pumping out the best players. There are other factors, team chemistry, coaching staff.. Even morale. The French had started the world cup under immense pressure due to their extremely embarrassing campaign in 2002.
It wasn't until they somehow beat Spain who were flying colours with an inspired Ribery that they gained confidence and momentum, toppled a shaky Brazil and knocked down the strongest Portugal side in history that they made the finals.
When I say average, it means as opposed to other opponents. Spain, Brazil, and Portugal were all teams that were all performing stronger than France prior to losing to them.

Not pure Jamaican though either! Ha. I suppose coming from a minor, minor footballing country like Jamaica, or at least self-identifying with it, justifies your following of all players with a connection to it. I guess it's like if I suddenly became a big fan of Ice Hockey, I'd be mining the NHL for any players with a connection to England.

It is more of a cultural thing. There are actually about as many Jamaicans living outside of Jamaica (2.5 million or so) than on the island of Jamaica itself (2.8 million). We have a long history of migrating in large numbers to faraway places, and a lot of practice maintaining a cultural identity across distances since we're so scattered. There aren't a lot of modern countries with more than 100% of their population overseas in a diaspora.
What I'm doing (following Jamaican descendants in scattered places in football, american football, music, politics, and anything else really) is actually pretty normal in this culture. It is just what happens when you come from a small, scattered population with a well defined identity.
If you're English, you've got a very different historical context to draw from (much larger, much more concentrated populations, though still somewhat scattered).

Well hold on now, I think we're good enough to knock off at least one "minor" here. When you put "minor, minor", I start thinking of the St. Vincents and Grenadas of the world, who we dominate.
At least we're in the top quarter for FIFA Rankings and have been to a WC (and got a result). Its something-you could do a lot worse.
