Collins is a 34-year-old respected veteran who has played for six teams over 12 seasons. Before this, he has probably best known for his uncanny ability to guard Dwight Howard.

In his SI article, Collins said his final motivation for coming out was being unable to participate in a gay pride parade in Boston in 2012:

"I realized I needed to go public when Joe Kennedy, my old roommate at Stanford and now a Massachusetts congressman, told me he had just marched in Boston's 2012 Gay Pride Parade. I'm seldom jealous of others, but hearing what Joe had done filled me with envy. I was proud of him for participating but angry that as a closeted gay man I couldn't even cheer my straight friend on as a spectator. If I'd been questioned, I would have concocted half truths. What a shame to have to lie at a celebration of pride. I want to do the right thing and not hide anymore. I want to march for tolerance, acceptance and understanding. I want to take a stand and say, 'Me, too.'"

Collins has a twin brother, Jarron, who also played in the NBA. Jared says he didn't come out to Jarron until last year, and he was "astounded."

Like I said in another thread, his teammates probably knew he was a little funny. No big deal. With a football team of 55-75 players, at least 5 are bound to be gay. It's easy to pick them out. They are still you teammates that goes to war with you on the field, court, diamond. NBA is alright because its only 11 other dudes. One or two might not mess with you, but it's a close knit sport so the team can't let his lifestyle affect their games.

Does he still play for Atlanta? Haha.

We already knew the dude was gay. Seriously, Jason Collins has to be one of the least skilled big men in the NBA. How does a 7 foot center average 3.8 rebounds per game over the course of his career?

I remember an interview with Lawrence Frank, then coach of the Nets. When he was asked about Collins' contribution to the squad, he said that he sets good screens.

Unless you live in San Fransisco or downtown Atlanta, ratios like that just don't exist in nature let alone Alpha sports like Football. We wouldn't exist as a species.

When i was in high school there were probably one or 2 guys out of several hundreds who acted a bit funny/feminine.

Can't believe this shit is starting to be tolerated even in the Manosphere.

I went to an Asian bathhouse once with my girl. Sure about like 30% of the dudes were gay (or at least seemed to be), and everyone's totally naked. Didn't really phase me. Wasn't creepy, and I thought it would be.

I played in Souther Cali suburbs so maybe thats the reason. I also played ball in New Orleans too. 95% black team and we had 2 funny dudes.

Can a gay dude make it to the top level? Maybe but I believe that most college teams have a few of them on the team. To each his own. The US is getting really gay. You think 2013 is bad just imagine 2030.

This is my view as well. The idea that being homosexual is a person's identity rather than something that they do is very strange to me. I am a man who likes girls. It's something that I do. I don't take "pride" in liking women any more than I take pride in liking steak. It's not something that I feel the need to go around and tell everyone about. "Hey, I just wanted to tell you...I really love the feeling of a nice, warm, wet pussy. I really just can't get enough of it. Is that cool with you? Are we cool?"

Imagine if people who had foot fetishes started to demand that we "accept" their sexual attraction to feet and going in the media talking about how they've been attracted to feet ever since they were children, etc...

I just don't give a fuck what you're attracted to, ok? Being gay is not "normal", in the sense that most people are not gay. It will always be a small minority of the population. It is not and should be be considered "mainstream". It is just a sexual behavior that a certain percentage of the population prefers. Why is it getting so much attention above and beyond every other sexual fetish?

Waiting to see Rex Ryan on the cover of SI proclaiming himself "The foot fetish coach" with a glowing article about how being a foot fetishist is wonderful and we should embrace it with open arms and fill popular culture will foot fetish imagery.

Oh boy, I just turned on NPR and it's just being blasted all over the news like this is some major development. Anything gays do now is front-page news. First gay athlete!!! First gay astronaut!!! First gay person to summit Mt. Everest without a Sherpa and no supplemented oxygen!!!

I'm so fucking sick of hearing about it. And I wouldn't even care if I was on a team with a gay guy, but quit acting like being queer makes someone newsworthy. I'm tired of it.

This thread inspired me, there is this huge collage of posters in the hallway of my dorm for gay rights groups and other pro-gay stuff, I decided to print this and post it next to the posters, lets see if there is a response. Btw the "Monfeeth" is referring to a building on campus called "Montieth"

He is a fledgling player whose career was over before coming out. Now a team has to sign him or else it makes the league look homophobic. David stern will force a team to sign him this summer. If no one signs him he goes on the talk show/gay circuit and becomes a hero who will make bank that way. It was really a smart business decision.

I applaud the courage; the locker room isn't an easy place for a gay guy, and there's bound to be some uncomfortable moments, but good for him for owning up to it and putting it out there, even though the stink of PR is all over this move.

What I can do without is the media trumpets sounding non-stop like this is some sort of landmark event in human history; I don't have a problem with gay people, I have a problem with the mainstreamization and the normalization of gayness, when it's neither mainstream or normal. I think that Feminists and Gays and all those out there lobbying for more or better rights and acceptance need to be told one thing at the start; Not everyone is going to like you, and not everyone has to like you. The art of manipulation is much more effective on someone who is on the fence to your cause than it is someone who is totally and fully against it.

What I'm saying is of course the gays deserve their human rights, but at the end of the day, it's not normal, and it does nothing to positively advance society (same can be said about Feminism). Society functioned before gay best friends, Broadway and salon visits, society will function after those things. I've been home two weeks, and I've already had it up to here the way that everyone has to love and accept everyone else.

To slightly sidetrack the topic, if I had a son who turned out to be gay, I wouldn't love him any less, but I wouldn't be able to shake the feeling that somewhere along the line, I failed as a father.
