That's exactly my situation. I choose to live in Northern California, with frequent travel to So Cal, and spend about 2 weeks per year in New York/New England and another 2 weeks in Wash DC.

I choose not to live outside the country for family reasons.

Doesn't work for Americans, but for most nationalities where tax liability is determined by place of residence, not by citizenship, a tax haven would be the best bet. Problem is most (hell, probably all) of the big cities that also have 0% Income and Capital Gains Taxes are in the Middle East (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha etc.). Not really my cup of tea. Most of the other tax havens are isolated islands where I'd get too board, no matter how great the weather.

So, my choice would be Monaco, since it is in an interesting and not isolated region. Though I am told you need to transfer mega-bucks to Monegasque bank accounts in order to get a residents permit. €10 mill+ was the figure I heard some years ago.

More realistically I would choose one of the Caribbean Islands and commute to the US every now and then.

It does work for Americans. If you stay outside the US for ~330 days per year, you avoid paying income tax on your first $90,000.

Ah, OK. So an American living in Dubai would get a break on 90K. Never knew that. Pretty harsh that you have to stay away 330 days though, Visiting friends and/or family emergencies would really eat into that.

It's like the government is saying: "If you want us to give you any break at all we don't want to see your ugly face around here."

Also, does this 90K exemption apply to state level income taxes as well?

Personally I wouldn't care to come back to the states so I would post up in SEA and move every three months. After that Eastern Europe, then South America.

I dunno about state income tax, but the federal info is here.

I think it's a hypothetical situation.

In any case, 100,000 is a shitton of money and you could live comfortably pretty much anywhere you want. So I don't understand why this is even a topic - although, if you ask me, Da Nang (Vietnam) would be my #1 choice as the cost of living is super low yet has plenty of amenities.

With that kind of money consistently coming in, I'd say somewhere in EE, to be decided after I'd bounced around there some. Budapest, Bucharest, maybe somewhere in Poland. You could go somewhere slightly "tarnished" (ie Prague) I think because you'd become a more of a local and differentiate yourself from the tourist poosy chasers while having some cash to throw at the local chicks.

This isn't taking any tax considerations into account, only assuming you'd arrange it to meet the 330 day rule and pay little to no tax in the actual country you're in.

I'd want a nice flat, nice car, and ability to travel around Europe. Not really interested in super luxury or small town status. I'd want to remain anonymous. I can understand some of you wanting SEA though, where you can live luxuriously on that income.

Also, your profile says you're in the US you wouldn't come back, but how long have you lived outside US? Do you have grounds for comparison.

I'd continue living in USA like I do now with basically the same 100k. I am married so don't need to chase tail. I feel America is the cheapest place to live and have 1st world life style. Living in NYC there is nothing I can't do. I can also do it cheaper than most places. Why give up free medical care and dental care to live in a 3rd world dump. Now if I was single I'd probably spend 1year in USA 1 year or less out. Keeps life interesting.
When I was expat I was exempt from state tax for staying out 330. Be aware you can technically give up residency of any state by not being present for 6 months. If you feel you need to visit your momma more longer than 30 days(lol u momma boys) give up USA citizenship. As long as you don't do it for obvious tax avoidance reasons ,you will not be on the hook for taxes and can automatically getcit back if you ever choose to come back. It is becoming more common. There are countries yOu can naturalize easily. Just make sure taxes where u become a resident is lower than USA. Most civilized countries have much higher tax rates not including those stupid vats.

Its a personal preference thing but 100k in most of the world would have you living like a king and dating top shelf talent.

What kind of women do you like? Latinas? Asians, Whites?

What kind of weather do you like? Tropical, temperate, cold?

What kind of food do you like? Dont expect to easily find good cheeses in Asia or spicy food in EE.

Do you have any hobbies? Sailing, skiing, hunting etc?

Language barrier? How committed are you to learning a hard language like Thai, russian etc

Figure out what your willing to live or not live with and go from there afterall you can always move if things are not working out for you.

This is basically my situation too.

I lived in Thailand etc which was fun but I do prefer the western world overall.

Living in Chicago for this summer. As good as anywhere in the world in the warmer months!

London, Dublin and Madrid are on the list for the future.

I would spend 4 months in Brazil, 2 months in undecided location in US (Most likely between NYC, Cali, Miami, and CO), and another 6 months traveling to various locations, discovering the world.

For me each year its 6 months working at a home base, and 6 months of hedonistic travel.

As a home-base, it's Edinburgh, Scotland for me. One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, with tons of pubs, the place is the natural writers city. 6 months there: July-Dec.

As the new year comes around and the Scottish winter sets in, it's time to jet off to warmer climes. For the next 3 months I'll go anywhere else in the world: East Asia, South America, Australia, you name it. After that, its back to main-land Europe to explore new places for another 3 months around the continent: 6 months travel done: Jan-Jun, and back to Edinburgh to begin the cycle once again.
