In ex-USSR countries the church had little power and thus divorce was easier under Communism. Those values (and lack thereof) remain.

What's your source for brazil? I lived there for a few years and would say most d the couples I met had been together for years even the ones who weren't legally married. I can't count the number people who just stayed in the LTR forever.
