Here's what Obama said, according to a White House transcript:

You have to be careful to, first of all, say she is brilliant and she is dedicated and she is tough, and she is exactly what you'd want in anybody who is administering the law, and making sure that everybody is getting a fair shake. She also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country — Kamala Harris is here. (Applause.) It's true. Come on. (Laughter.) And she is a great friend and has just been a great supporter for many, many years. [via The Los Angeles Times]

The part about Harris being "the best-looking attorney general" didn't go over well on Twitter, or on many liberal blogs. Commenting on Harris' looks was "sexist (and stupid)," says Katie McDonough at Salon. And "if you're not sure why," McDonough explains using a bunch of outraged tweets. Jonathan Chait at New York picks up the thread, explaining why Obama needs "gender-sensitivity training":

I don't have a problem with what Obama said at all, but he should've known the shitstorm that would ensue. These feminists are in his constituency so he knows their thinking very well.

Notice nobody ever complained when Sarah Palin was called "hottest governor".

Notice, he apologized "for creating a distraction." He's dismissing the feminists and solidifying his friendship with Harris at the same time. He doesn't think it's sexist but he realizes he shouldn't have used those words in order to avoid PC bullshit uproar.

They already do! Google "women feel invisible" without quotes to get a spate of sob stories about how aging women can't handle not getting the very cat calls they once protested against. I'm surprised no one has seen the unconscious racism of feminists in this whole thing. I had mentioned in my comment (above) that feminists criticized Obama for merely praising a woman's looks, but had no problem with Bill Clinton sexing up an intern in his office.

Someone (maybe me) should expose this as revealing the phobia they clearly have about black men expressing their sexuality. I'm not one to see racism everywhere, but I do see it here. They give a pass to the white guy getting his dick sucked but jump all over the (half)black guy expressing an opinion.

It's not race, it's frame. Clinton is the bad boy, the rake, the womanizer. Women know it going in, and are taken in by his charm. They see it as so inherent to who he is that, well, he can't really be blamed for it. Obama is the nice guy, the chump. As soon as he deviates from that role, and tries to act like a womanizer, his girl will wig out and shriek. Women don't take shit from men they consider lame. Hell, if Biden did this, there'd be less if any protest, and he probably would not apologize.

When Charlie Sheen starts banging hookers or pornstars, or nearly slaughters his wife to death, no one's really incensed. They're like, "eh, it's Charlie Sheen, what did you expect?" But when Hugh Grant bangs a hooker, or some teeny bopper gets DPed or something, everyone's up in arms about what a travesty and abomination it is.

Not talking politics here, but in my opinion Obama is the most boring American president I have observed. And I'm old enough to have formed opinions on Reagan onwards. I'm sorry, but he has no mojo. Being chewed out for such a minor off the cuff comment only confirms it.

I know he can't serve as president again, and has achieved one or two significant legislative goals, but he really needs to do something fast if wants to stamp his own personality on the office. Considering he's starting at such a disadvantage it will have to be big. I recommend cheating on his wife.......with a White chick! Now the fallout from that will ensure that he is not forgotten in a hurry.
