Members of Florida International University's National Organization of Women (NOW) are mad as hell, and they aren't going to take it anymore. The group, along with other student organizations, has organized Miami's first SlutWalk, taking place tomorrow, April 3.

As children, we might have been taught that words can never hurt us, but we all know that isn't exactly true. Starting with the black community reappropriating the racially charged N-word, groups facing discrimination have taken the words that others use against them and stripped them of their power by using them in a positive manner.

Some members of the LGBT community have done it, taking back words like "faggot" and "dyke" and using them in a sociable way toward other members of their community. Now, Miami "sluts" are doing the same.

The original SlutWalk began in Toronto as a response to a comment made by a representative of the Toronto Police. His ignorant attitude, one shared by many and perpetrated by social attitudes, was demonstrated in his statement that "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order to avoid being victimized."

In reaction to this statement, five Canadian residents organized the first SlutWalk in a matter of six weeks, intending to demonstrate that women in charge of their sexuality do not deserve to be sexually assaulted.

Vice president of FIU's NOW chapter and SlutWalk co-organizer Odette Morono Ponce says, "This is an event to promote the end of a rape culture and ensure that victims are no longer blamed and shamed for being victims."

I can't pinpoint why, but Florida and California seem to produce the most sluts in the U.S. in terms of sheer numbers. These bitches must be handed a career catalog in high school that has the following choices: Hooters girl, stripper, porn star, playboy model, bikini model, bartender at a dive, bottle server or dancer at a nightclub.
