Kim Jong-un is a man of peace. Seriously.

He is rattling the cage now so that he can better terms and conditions for himself and his people. He is in a tight spot (South Korea and China don't want North Korea to collapse - so cannot help.)

His power play is straight out of the book of Answar Sadat. He was president of Egypt and wanted peace with Israel. And in order to get the best terms possible - he launched the Yom Kippur war. And it worked. After signing the peace treaty with Israel - Egypt received billions of dollars in US foreign aid and military spending right up until the fall of President Mubarrak.

Indeed - the driving force behind the fall of President Mubarrak was hatred toward the political elite for not being at war with Israel and anger at the co-operation with Israel (and the US). It was this same hatred towards Israel which led to the assasination of Sadat (see below):





Interestingly - the current leader of Al Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was arrested and imprisoned in the round-up following this assasination.

Four years after signing the peace treaty, President Sadat was awarded a Nobel Peace Price. And was revered as a man of peace and wisdom in the US.

One day Kim Jong-un will get a Nobel prize as well. The guy was educated in the west, is a huge fan of US pop culture, has just spent time haging with Dennis Rodman, is on Facebook (under a fake name) and my gut feeling tells me he wants a way out, and a better future for his people.

This whole situation can be remedied with one phone call. Imagine for a moment you are in Kim Jung Un's shoes, you are inheriting a 70 odd year old regime in which your father/grandfather had a personality cult to the extent that their photographs are in every home. You are barely 30 years old and have a large number of generals putting pressure on you to prove yourself. All this guy wants is recognition from someone so he can move on with his leadership.

Dennis Rodman when he came back from NK said himself that Kim isn't a bad guy, he's just a young guy who has been thrust into an extraordinary situation. That interview with Rodman is so infuriating because instead of it being a discussion about how to improve relations it is just an attack by the frankly idiotic news reporter on how Rodman should have told Kim what America has been telling him to do all along. If Obama or anyone in power in the west calls Kim and says, "We recognise you as the new leader, lets have a more positive relationship" he will be all ears in my honest opinion. He doesn't want a war, that would be like an Infant who potentially has one free shot boxing with Mike Tyson. Anyone who actually believes what they see on television (especially american news stations) needs to take a long, hard look at themselves.

I don't know if it is that easy.

The main thing that North Korea has always wanted is to reunite North and South Korea under one ruler. That ain't gonna happen without a ton of bloodshed. However, one way or another, I think that it will eventually happen. I am just not sure if it will be a peaceful reunification or a bloody reunification, but it will happen.
