USA Today Wrote:MONTGOMERY, AL - In a stunning reversal of decades of judicial practice, the Supreme Court of Alabama, ruling on a controversial case of Lewis vs. Kelly, ended the practice of allowing divorce without the need to prove the fault of the other side, such as cheating, abuse or gross negligience.

The story had started in 2010. After a string of failed marital therapy sessions and pleading, Zoe Kelly (35) had taken her ex-husband John Lewis (36) to court over him simply declaring that their marriage was over one day and going over to Florida to marry his lover, Elena Sanchez, a Colombian immigrant. After three years of wrangling in court, Ms. Kelly was decided to be correct, and that Mr. Lewis was still legally married to his spouse unless he could prove "gross violation of marital expectations and customs". Otherwise, a divorce could not be granted.

Angry protesters from the (Women of Alabama's Independence Table (WAIT) reacted with dismay. "While this decision might seem like a victory for women on the surface, it will open the gates for all sorts of abandonment, and women will suffer in the long run," said Mrs Hartford, a social psychologist and professor of Women's Studies at the University of Alabama. "This is unbelievable. This decision has just set women's rights in Alabama back a hundred years. We all know how many husbands there are who have their wives trapped in unhappy marriages, wives who will now be unable to escape. What's next, abolishing alimony so men can kick their aging wives out with no penalty at all? What an outrageous move by the Supreme Court!"

The protest, while certainly agitated, did not appear to be in the danger of turning violent. Mr. Lewis and his Colombian lover could not be reached for comment.
