With all the talk about gay marriage lately, one thing has been missing from the debate: The same argument and line of reasoning that is used to support gay marriage can be used to support polygamy.

Now, women naturally are hypergamous, and with the "decline" in the general earning power of men, some women might be more open to being in a polygamous marriage than not to marry at all. It may never be a large number of people who engage in polygamy, but I could see rich dudes, and especially their sugar babies, wanting polygamy legal.

What are your thoughts? Possible or not?

What self-respecting, healthy male with a healthy sex drive--and also has decent skills with women--isn't practicing polygamy (polygyny, to be more precise) anyway???
Does it really take some official paperwork for us to call it what it is???
I live with my two girlfriends. Though I am TOTALLY against inviting the government into another aspect of my life by getting legally married, my lifestyle can be described as polygynous. Everyone who knows me refers to me as a polygamist.
Women are already sharing a man with another/other woman/women.
Why not legalize the shit???
In a true patriarchy, this wouldn't be a discussion.
I've read writings here & there in the so-called "manosphere" against polygamy.
Can someone let me know what the beef is with polygamy/polygyny???
Is it some fear of not being "alpha" enough and getting weeded out of the gene pool because some men will have multiple women while others none???
If so, that's pretty much the world's modus operandi anyway.

This wouldn't be a good thing. If it got to the point where a small amount of men were scooping up large numbers of desirable women and building harems that could lead to instability. I think things functioned best when every guy was pretty much guaranteed a woman. Everything men do on some level is to raise his status for access to a better woman. Guys work hard so they can make more money and status so they can get women. What fun is making tons of money and having a nice car and pad if you've got blue balls? If you aren't getting laid then having all that money is pointless. For many men that aren't high status, their pool of women will dry up and they will start working less hard. It'll be bad for the economy and social stability. You'll start having more crackpots with guns shooting up random crowds in frustration.

You have to think through the unintended social consequences of this stuff.

Yep, and the wife on the far left, the only one approaching normal BMI, is his newest and youngest wife. I've seen the show, and the first three wives seethe in jealousy over the fourth who gets most of the guy's attention.

This presupposes that polygyny will somehow lead to the society becoming some ancient Aztec-like despotism, wherein the women are--against their wills--forced to be 1 in a harem if 15,000.
I guarantee you that legalizing polygamy/polygyny won't lead to hordes of women scrambling to be in a harem of 1,000s.
You also presuppose that legal polygamy/polygyny will instill some widespread piety in women, i.e., women will suddenly stop sneaking around and fucking someone else behind their providers' backs.
What fabled time & land was it where guys were "guaranteed" a woman. Surely, you aren't speaking of ANY time on Earth. On Earth, this mythical, elusive-as-a-unicorn "guarantee" has NEVER existed.

Is it polygamous/polygynous behavior that will bring about this speculative "instability," or is it simply legalizing it and call the ongoing polygamous/polygynous behavior what it is? I don't understand how you can tell Mormon's or Muslims who practice polygamy with their religion that its illegal, but two guys is legal...

Anyone who supports gay marriage but who doesn't support polygamy is being wildly inconsistent. The standard argument for why gay marriage should be legalized is that two consenting adults should be able to engage is sort of activities together they wish as long as it doesn't infringe on other people. I don't see how that argument is any less invalid is you expand it from two consenting adults to multiple consenting adults. The SOLE reason that you don't see the sort of popular support for polygamy that you see for gay marriage is because those who practice polygamy are content to keep it to themselves and they have no interest in justifying themselves to the rest of society. I believe there are actually some Mormons who do this. One guy will have an officially legally binding marriage with one of his wives while living with his other wives who don't have the same sort of legal contract with him but are for all purposes he is still married to all of them.

Another reason why (yeah I know I said my previous reason was the sole reason but whoops I lied) gay marriage has gained traction while polygamy has not is because it has the support of the cultural elite behind it; the cultural elite being those who controls entertainment and popular media in the country. Gays were in a unique situation where they had not only other gays but also supporters located all over the entertainment industry whether it be in movies, TV shows, or hell even video games. Look at all the recent Bioware titles. Basically being gay is associated with being trendy and progressive. Polygamy on the other hand is associated with fanatics and cultural backwardness - the same group that anti-gay marriage people are associated with.

Yes, I think it will become legal at some point. Wouldn't want to guess when though.

It is legal, to a limited degree, in South Africa. The relevance here is that liberal US Supreme Court justices like Ginsberg have made statements to the effect that they think the South African constitution is superior to the US constitution. And the SA equivalent of the Supreme court, the Constitutional Court, has OK'd both Gay Marriage (enthusiastically) and limited polygamy (reluctantly, but still OK'd).

It's limited in the sense that polygamy is only allowed for certain groups that have practiced it formally for some time and where it is acceptable to the community they come from. In effect this means it's limited to Black African members of certain tribes (e.g, Zulu's). Interestingly it's not allowed for Muslims since the Muslim authorities in the country are strongly opposed to plural marriages (i.e. The practice does not have community support).

The problem with the above is that there is inevitably going to be a case where somebody not from those certain tribes gets it into his head that he wants to marry multiple women, and ends up in the Constitutional Court claiming that, in not being allowed to do so, he is being discriminated against based on his race, religion or another protected class. In my opinion he'd be right. If one person has a right, everyone should have that right baring very extraordinary circumstances.

But back to the US. It would seem unlikely since both conservative and liberal justices are likely to be against the practice, but I think the tide will turn. First challenge is likely to come from a religious Muslim who declares his religious right to marry 4 wives. And once this is granted, the claim will be that if the Muslim guy can do it, then so can everyone.

Incidentally, why would any man truly need government recognition of his multiple wives anyway? If a Muslim guy wants that (and I think polygamy is merely something Islam allows but that the vast majority of Islamic men do not -- and cannot -- partake in), he can religiously marry multiple women. The government need not be involved.

Even if they don't get legally married to multiple women, they can be charged with bigamy:
