Two British women aid workers were kidnapped and raped in front of their father after being stopped at an unofficial checkpoint in Libya.

The sisters were abducted when their vehicle was stopped on the outskirts of the eastern city of Benghazi.

They were taken by men in military uniforms to an isolated farm and subjected to a horrific sex attack in front of they father.

Witnesses said the young women, both Pakistan-born British citizens, were wearing veils and Free Palestine T-shirts. Libyan officials said four suspects have been arrested and security forces are trying to trace a fifth.

It was unclear whether they were part of the ‘revolutionary brigades’ that serve under the country’s security ministries.

Deputy prime minister Awad al-Barassi said the sisters were in a ‘very bad shape’ after the horrific attack, which happened on Tuesday. Last night they were preparing to fly home to the UK.

He said the women were part of an ten-vehicle aid convoy trying to reach the Gaza Strip with medical supplies. Organised by IHH, a Turkish humanitarian relief organisation, the aid mission left Britain on February 25 but became stuck in Libya when Egyptian border guards refused to let the convoy cross.

The family were on a bus on their way to Benghazi’s Benina airport when they were stopped at the unofficial checkpoint by armed young men in military uniforms.

Mr al-Barassi said the women and their father were kidnapped, and the man witnessed his daughters’ rape.

He said he visited the victims and met their father at a Benghazi hospital to apologise on behalf of the Libyan people and government. He described the family as being in a ‘very bad psychological state’.

There were reports that two other members of the aid group were also assaulted by a different armed group and that two others are missing.

The remaining members of the aid convoy travelled to the Turkish consulate in Benghazi for safety.

Mr al-Barassi said those involved in the attack would stand trial soon.

The attack highlights how Libya remains a dangerous place for foreigners in the aftermath of the overthrow of the Gaddafi regime.

Hundreds of heavily armed militia, many with links to criminal gangs, continue to operate freely across the country.

Come on now. Why would you wear something like that in Gaza? I blame their father for letting them dress like that in that place. He should have known better.

I have no business being in that shitty country. They've been fighting over nothing for years. Fighting their great grandfathers' arguments.

It's only a matter of time before someone(probably Iran) drops the big bomb on that country.

Parlay, they were in Libya outside of Benghazi. They must have thought they were being "cool" by wearing a pro-Palestine shirt in Muslim territory or something. Just like when that stupid cunt Cameron Diaz wore a Maoist symbol on her bag in Peru, offending them because of their bloody history of communist insurgency.

Look into the IHH (Turkish NGO), and you realize all isn't what it seems with them. They were the organization behind the 'Mavi Marmara' incident with Israel in 2010, and even though Israel did over react - 9 people were killed, I believe the intention of the IHH in sending the convoy to Gaza wasn't to 'give relief' but was mostly to provoke Israel (Israel recently and finally apologized to Turkey for this unnecessary use of force). They are suspected of having ties with some pretty nasty people. In recent years Turkey has had a greatly inflated ego regarding its sense of it becoming a regional power, thinking it has the power to 'do things' on the global stage and that it doesn't need Europe (many Turks are quite anti-American as well). Incidents like this illustrate how wrong this line of thinking is. Do you think USAID, or an EU CSDP Civilian mission, would be turned away at an Egyptian border checkpoint? One step back, such efforts would never travel by bus through such dangerous lawless territory in the first place. I would blame the increasingly egotistical Turkey and the proliferation of anti-Western themes in Turkey (and elsewhere) in the last decade or so for this hideous incident - and certainly not on the 2011 military intervention in Libya.

No one asked for this convoy to go to Gaza, their 'supplies' would have made zero difference. It was undertaken just to make a political point - just like the 2010 flotilla incident. This is unfortunately what can happen. Blaming it on the US and Europe is just superficial.
