I've noticed that an increasing number of guys (mostly newbies, but also some vets) are not putting lot of thought into their thread titles. In a small forum, that isn't a problem, but here it increases the likelihood that people won't notice and reply to your thread as well as the chances that people will create dupes. No one has time to read every post, so they go on the thread titles a lot of the time. So, when you have titles like this it creates ambiguities.

"I can't believe this!!!"

"My aha-moment"

"Super Crazy bitch"

"This Is Fucked Up"

(I'm not singling out jazzman92 or vinman, but they're just recent examples that I noticed.)

That doesn't mean that you need to write long descriptive titles (or abstain from expressing yourselves in the title field), just keep in mind how guys browse through the forum. Think of reading an online news source with these two thread titles. Which are you more likely to click on?

OR

Guy Draws Dicks on Roommate's Face. Receives Epic Beat-Down.

Finally, keep using the search feature before you post a thread (especially news stories that are likely to have received some attention here).

Good pt. All future data sheets and report threads I think should be dated e.g. "March 2013" because places tend to change as time goes on. Would also give readers more perspective and enhance the search process.

I'm bumping this thread because Ziltoid's thread title (which I gave him a hard time about) reminded me:

Guys click on threads a lot less when you have unclear thread titles. I understand the desire to have a sexy, attention-getting subject lines, but being vague isn't intriguing. It's confusing.

This is especially a problem when your thread is about a popular article online. When guys can't find your thread it creates dupe threads.

Do your part in keeping the forum clean.

It's time for another reminder for newbies (and senior members too) to use clear, unambiguous thread titles. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece, or boring, but it should be honest and considerate. Vague and misleading thread titles don't just make it so that guys don't read your thread--or annoy them when they do--it often results in warnings/suspensions.

The "service fee" for a re-titling, to which you are subject for a horrible thread title, is generally a 20% warning for the first violation, but it can be higher for habitual violators.

Here are some sample thread titles since the last bump. Notice the difference between the original and the re-titled versions.

Ridiculous Article

Re-titled: Ridiculous Article: How to Spot a Relationship Guy vs a Player

You guys are gonna hate this one...

Re-titled: Filthy Whore Blackmails Family Man to Death

Another hamsterific article from Huffington Post.

Re-titled: Woman Complains about Her Smelly Pussy on HuffPo

when that day comes....

Re-titled: Yet Another Newbie Thread On How to Break Things Off

I remember someone mentioning a while back how participating in this forum made them a better writer.

Your posts have to be well articulated in order to be well received here. Posts that don't have a lot of thought put into them don't get a lot of responses. Unorganized and poorly written posts are difficult to read and waste people's time. Guys don't like their time being wasted. Those who engage in this practice are flamed.

You'll see the quality of your writing improve if you post here often. That is if you care at all about being taken seriously by other cool guys.

Now the bar is being set higher with this new policy requiring good headline copy.

As a result of this policy, guys will have to think about how to write headlines that grab people's attention. Copywriters know that the headline is the most important piece of a sales letter because it induces people to keep reading. If your headline sucks, nobody will buy what you're selling.

This skill also leads over into conversation. You can't just start telling a long story to someone without preamble. You need to build up to it. You need to get them excited about what you're going to say next.

You're not just writing a headline. You're taking a step along the journey to becoming a better storyteller.

Who knows, one day you might be able to charge $25,000 for a sales letter like some of the top dogs out there.

If your title sounds like it could be an Upworthy headline, you should write a new one.

I'm really liking the better thread titles in EE. There are less threads but far greater quality and discussion.

I thought you were just saying this to give positive reinforcement, but I think you're right. With a couple of notable exceptions, the titles are improving. The front page got instantly more readable.

I've noticed this trend take hold over the past year. Thread titles are boring or try hard. It's either "Did I mess up?" or "Some Silly Slang Subtitle Story."

Agreed - I am seeing more and more shitty thread titles that sound spammy. I personally try to avoid clickbait titles.
