Taking A Dumbbell On Holiday
Is it realistic?

I'm planning a few weeks away in March where I will be travelling to a new town pretty much each day so finding and joining a gym in each town is unrealistic. I'd like to take a weight of some sort. I know there are bodyweight exercises but I just can't be motivated doing them. I'd like to take a 20 kilo plate with me or a 15-20 kilo dumbell so I can work out in my room each morning.

Any ideas how to transport one? Can I take a plate as hand luggage on airlines? I have heard of dumbbells you can fill with water, anyone ever used one?

Maybe it's too much in the "bodyweight" category, but you might look into resistance bands or (slightly bulkier) a Jungle Gym XT.

Nah dude, if you want to travel with something, best bet is resistance bands. They are horrible, but at least its something and it does not kill luggage weights.

I tend to always book into hotels where there are gyms and I pick hotels based more on gyms than anything. I find a decent gym at a hotel and Ill stay at that same hotel more regularly.

If you are staying in apartments, then you need to find a place that has a local gym nearby. One of the cool things about gyms in the shitholes of the world is that they tend to be a mans gym when you can find them. Nothing but benches, racks and free weights quite often.

Lugging a 20kg plate around is alot more effort than bodyweight exercises....

Bands are OK, but really all you need for a good workout is:

Pistol squat (legs)
Pseudo-planche pushup (shoulders chest tris)
Chinups (back + bis)

For chinups, either find a bar in a park, a tree, or you could just buy these light portable chinup handles.

For a few weeks that's really all you need. Bodyweight doesnt need to be gay calisthenic movements - all the above you can do in the 6-12 rep range and get a good workout. Even if you bench 315 you'll be able to make planche pushups difficult enough by altering your hand position. And most lifters cant do more than a few pistols even if they are big squatters.

If you want some intense cardio, you can do tabata squat thrusts or burpees. 4 minutes, twice a week, will shatter you and keep your fitness up. I like bodyweight because it's alot quicker than weights, especially for travelling+ keeping strong/lean/fit.

Get a high quality sandbag that you can fill up and empty. They are extremely versatile.
Or if you have more space you can get something you fill up with water--but that can be a bit bulky to carry around.

I can't imagine traveling with a 20 kilo metal plate.

I would consider getting an ab roller for travel or holiday. It's compact enough for travel.
