Advice on Books/Resources for Starting Travel/Game Blog
I know lots of you have your own blogs and many on RVF are quite tech savvy, so I thought that this would be a good place to ask for help:

I've been looking to set up a blog and I was hoping that forum members could point me in the right direction (informational books/websites, hosting rec's, tips). I have very little knowledge of the subject (used to do xanga, if people even remember that) and my last few attempts at using Wordpress was a disaster.

Basically, I want to set up a travel blog that details most of the tricks and strategies I use to fly first class and business around the world for very little money. I realize that the travel blog arena is pretty saturated, but I'm looking to put my own spin on it with a mix of travel, food and gaming chicks.

I'm not totally averse to spending some scratch, but I kind of want to keep it low key at first until I get my sea legs... so if anyone has any recommendations on books, resources or affordable web hosting, I'd be very appreciative. I'm looking to set up sort of a cottage industry for forum members here to spread the knowledge, but the blog is definitely the first step I need to take to build legitimacy and get the process going.

No one is going to hold your hand, and this site certainly isn't the best to ask for recommendations on blogs.

There are unlimited resources on everything, it is up to you to go get them.
Search on google, find the proper forums, find the right guides and books.
Go to your local library to check out more than the necessary amount of material on blogging, SEO, writing, marketing, and web design.

Wanting to keep cost low is a great start, but there will be some costs. It takes money to make money.

Start coming up with material for your blog. Purchase a domain name and hosting services.
Build the website on your own, don't hire someone else.

If you don't have the brains to do the above...

Wordpress does have something of a learning curve and the menu can be unintuitive. My last 2 attempts at wordpress were frustrating. I've always preferred drag-and-drop website builders.

Here's a good list of drag-and-droppers:

A side thought: At the moment the internet world is drowning in new content. Because of oversupply, we are fast approaching a situation where only 0.1% of blogs will be making 99.9% of the money. This can only get worse as the oversupply continues.

Good looking out, guys. JohnWu, I'm not trying to get people to do the work for me... I've actually already written out about a month's worth of material in MS Word, I just wanted to see if people (primarily those who have their own blogs) could point me in the right direction on resources teaching the best way to set up blogs.

Like Roosh, I tend to break things up into 3 month projects. I'm just starting my fitness project, might have to shelve this for a little while. Thanks again for the link Thomas.

How about not being so condescending and actually dropping some data before you start throwing stones.

This guy has dropped solid info on yelp amongst other things.

Whats the point of this attitude? Seems like a lot of your posts read the same way.

If you don't have any helpful advice don't comment.

Thats exactly what he is doing here.

Thanks for the support Gmanifesto, problogger seems as good a place as any to start. Thankfully, I think I'll have a pretty good niche market and be able to monetize almost immediately if I play my cards right.

Irishman, I'm glad you liked my yelp thread and I appreciate the sticking up for me. Hope your project gains some traction too.
