Lectures are too slow. Most people can read about 2-3x faster than they can listen.

Audiobooks are great for driving though, and I throw on RSD/Owen Cook Youtube lectures while I clean.

Not really, I get bored and switch off usually. I learn by reading. I can digest enormous amounts of information if it's a subject I am interested in.

When I first stumbled on to Roosh's blog. I had like 20 tabs open, after clicking all the hyperlinks that link the articles together. Needless to say I was learning at a very rapid rate about women, feminism etc.

If you take notes and create questions to answer later it might be good.

I've taken some online classes, and the lecturers are usually awful.

Listening to something while you clean is a good idea.

A good lecture is like a choreographed battle between the presenter and the audience. If it's boring then you are either unprepared, the lecturer is unprepared, or you expect it to be like a bedtime story.

If I were learning on the internet, I wouldn't watch a video lecture. I hate videos. I'd read the book and the notes and then talk on forums, chat, video Q&A sessions with TAs and the prof.

That aside, I've had great success learning soft topics like history from audio lectures. I'll put them on while driving or am otherwise unable to be engaged.

I prefer books. I recently tried watching a 20 hour course online - but I have admitted defeat half-way through.

I still a bit guilty about that since I have never really experienced lectures in a subject I am interested in before. But - I just find books a more enjoyable and efficient way of learning.

On a logical level. What advantages would a lecture have over a book. Apart from being able to ask questions?

A lot of lecturers are really terrible at their jobs and its hard to stay focused, but when the lecturer is prepared well and presents the information in an organised and interesting way, I can learn quite a lot from the lectures. Unfortunately I'm stuck with at least 2 lecturers this semester that barely speak English. I haven't seen the 3rd yet though, so hopefully I get lucky

When I was at school - I always felt I would have done much better if I could stay at home and just learn directly from the textbooks. So much time seemed to be wasted at school - and yet the only time I learned anything was when I had a chance to spend time actually reading the damn books.

I am sure alot of education now is just a job creation scheme for teachers. For most pupils who are reasonably smart - I am sure they would be much better off spending the day at home reading the textbooks than actually being at school.

But then again. The main purpose of school is to discipline children enough that they can be useful workers in the future. That function is more important than education when it really comes down to it.

Is that why attendance is counted in universities? My Spanish prof lopped off 8 points from my class grade due to my absences and tardies.

I went to an event where the speakers spoke about the stalk market. I would say it was more of an 8 hour long sales pitch. -Not worth it

I went to another seminar which included the likes of Zig Zigglers daughter, Terry Bradshaw, George W Bush, and some other's I can not recall.

That was a good seminar. It was a tad too long as it was 6-8 hours as well, but the motivational speaking points were decent. Terry Bradshaw was hilarious.

Sounds lame.

If both variables were changed and the content was interesting and the person was also interesting, then I can learn a shit ton sitting around in my boxers. However, what I learn is usually shit I can apply to myself and then in turn do or act upon.

If the subject is boring, I imagine unless it's mandatory for someone's field, then you probably won't learn a thing. Atleast if the person is boring and the content has some weight and intrigue to it you can muster up the will power to take it in.

Probably my least preferred medium for learning something.

When you read and when you are actively doing something, you have more control over your learning since you can take it at your own pace. Each person in a lecture hall (or sitting in front of a computer) is coming from a different educational background and skill set, so I would think being able to exercise personal introspection in a manner that helps you best grasp the knowledge presented to you is best.

I often find the pace of lectures to be too rapid...before I can even agree/understand the basic assumptions the lecturer is operating under, he/she is already on key point #3 and I'm completely lost...YouTube helps in this regard tremendously, but college lecture halls? I'll pass. Thankfully, most of my professors used PowerPoint.

No, not usually. However, it depends on the context. If it's a lecture in a university class, then I'm probably thinking, "Holy shit, when is going to end." If it's just some lecture that's not affiliated with the formal context of a class, then I'll probably learn more.

One of my colleagues teaches an internet Criminal Justice course online for a state university, and he has nothing but good things to say about it.

On the other hand, read something today, that basically said we've been doing online lecture classes for years, and from a student actually learning stuff prospective, the evidence is awful.

People used to learn a lot by being mentored by an expert in a trade... this is what is still done on the phd level. I'd rather have only half an hour once a month of one on one time than go to lectures.

However, most people will need regular homework to keep themselves from slacking off. I think that the reason people don't do as well has nothing to do with the method of delivery. It's because part of going to class introduces accountability and pressure to perform that you just don't get from the comfort of your own home.
