Firstly, half the advice here is uninformed bullshit.

Secondly, you should be careful. The US allows dual citizenship, but you lose your American citizenship if you renounce it to become a citizen of a foreign nation. So basically, if the US government ever finds out, you could lose your citizenship.

I suggest that you read more about the laws involved on both sides before you try to game the system. Dual citizenship is permitted by US law, but renouncing your US citizenship to a foreign power is considered tantamount to renouncing it at home AFAIK.

What do you stand to gain this way? Everything you have said so far can be done without SK citizenship. It sounds like a bit of a pointless scheme.

Interesting thread.

To anyone who has a parent who's born in Europe, it might be worth while for you to look into their country's citizenship policies.

My dad was born in Solvenia and as a result I can claim citizenship for myself up until the age 35. I haven't looked into the details yet, but so long as there's no military service requirements or any fucked up dual taxation issues I plan on getting a Slovenian passport in a couple years so I'll have free roam of the Schengen.

Samseau I'm wondering if your mother becoming a Korean citizen might actually make it easier for you after that's been done.

Right now neither of you are Korean citizens so the citizenship qualification might be different. Once she gets a citizenship it might be easier for you

It seems to me your US citizenship and passport are not at risk. The US, like other sane countries, allows dual-nationality. It's the Koreans who will cancel your Korean passport if they find out that you have not renounced your US citizenship. If so what's the big deal? You are just back to where you started. I doubt you'd be arrested and charged in Korea, though obviously I am not speaking from experience.

I do have experience travelling on multiple passports. I have three, but all three countries allow multiple nationality. But they do want you to enter the country on the passport of that country. So if you have British and Canadian citizenship and have just landed in Toronto you must show your Canadian passport. They are not cool with you entering on a British passport if you also have a Canadian one. It's all down to diplomatic issues, tax issues and who knows ahat other issues. Basically they don't wan you to be able to escape any obligation as a national.

I do know of an Asian (not Korean) national who was in this predicament. He was stalling on accepting Canadian citizenship because it meant he'd have t give up his original citizenship. He also said, though, that many people just do not let the authorities know and get a second passport anyway.

Not to harp on this, but what you're saying is far from true. The US will not allow dual citizenship if you voluntarily naturalize in another country with the intent to relinquish your US citizenship.

Good find. You are right, people should be careful. It seems a bit of a gray area.

To my (non-legal) mind the wording on the link would seem to indicate that if you obtain a friendly nations citizenship, even if their law requires you to revoke your US citizenship, you are OK with Uncle Sam as long as you don't actually do it (i.e. You don't actually revoke your US citizenship formally as per US law). But I fully agree that this interpretation could be wrong and Samseau needs to get legal advice.

Forget Korea if you want second citizenship for the reasons you mentioned, Samseau. As a Korean American that used to work in Seoul, I had a bitch of a time settling citizenship matters (Korea/US) because I never formally renounced my Korean citizenship when my family naturalized here in the US. Besides, the US and the ROK are close allies and they have both extradition and tax treaties. If you do decide to go through with it, the best that can happen is that you'll pay taxes in both countries... the worst that can happen is that they will force you into mandatory military service, unless you're nearing 40, which by your "dance game" thread, I'm guessing you're not.

If you want bank secrecy, tax advantages and a fast track to citizenship, I'd suggest Uruguay. The process is streamlined, you only need to prove that you make $500 a month, they have no tax treaty with the US and it's a sleepy little country that nobody cares about in case shit hits the fan in the US. I've already looked into it and am seriously considering it.

Not so sure about that. I have a half American half Korean friend that got involuntarily drafted into the army. His Korean was terrible too, so they made him one of those KATUSA's, basically an envoy between the US and Korean soldiers.

Actually... my mother was adopted from South Korea. She was left at an orphanage when she was young and the reason my grandmother picked my mother was because she was white with strong Asian features.

The head of the orphanage said that my mother would face intense discrimination growing up as a white girl in an Asian society (this was back in the 1960's), so my grandmother took the most pity on her.

I'm guessing my mother was the bastard child of some Korean woman who couldn't resist some white soldier stationed at the border in Seoul, but, since she couldn't bear the shame of having a child out of wedlock she dropped my mother off at an orphanage.

Thus my mother's example is a strong case against multi-culturalism, because it was my adoptive white grandmother who spared my mother a horrible fate in Korea.

Also, my case is a good example of why I'm against abortion... had my mother been conceived in 2012, she wouldn't have been dropped off at an orphanage, she would have been just another discarded fetus.

That said, just because I'm against multi-culturalism doesn't mean I'm against racial inter-marriage, because in a mono-culturalist society there will be the expectation of a woman or man marrying in to another culture of adopting it.

It is possible, but not worth it. I have dual citizenship, and its very valuable, but if you had to choose between South Korean and American, stick with the American for now.

I think things are getting better there now. My story: I was born as a US citizen in Seoul and grew up in Korea for the first 7 years of my life (I am ethnically full Korean), and attended school on a US air force base. Many of my elementary school classmates were half-Korean, half-white children who were products of marriages/dalliances between local Korean women and US soldiers--it was so common I never thought anything of it, let alone witness any overt "discrimination" (this was in the mid-1990's). I remember back in 2006 after the Steelers won Super Bowl XL and Hines Ward won MVP, he went back to Korea with his mom on a publicity tour to advocate against discrimination against biracial children like himself. He was received like a king. Korea's one of the most ethnically homogenous countries on earth and for better or worse it'll stay that way, but I'd say now it's definitely better than the reality your mother would have had to face had she stayed behind.
