If you look at every major news site's comment section you'll see similar sentiments expressed everywhere. That this would have something to do with Northern Europeans I can only see as some lame attempt to bait me. I simply think it's fucking sick to be touching children.

Of course this makes catholics uneasy, but since they have tried to smooth over the pedophilia network running in their church's upper echelons for over a decade that's only to be expected. Are you defending Benedict's defense of his molesting bishops?

To anyone not aware of the full extent of the catholic church' systematic child abuse I recommend the documentary Mea Maxima culpa: Silence in the house of God that was released last year. It's not for those weak of a stomach however.

Agreed, it's sickening and the church pretty much did their best to deny it was ever happening.

This is an interesting development. Incidentally, I don't think the rate of clerical sex abuse in the Catholic Church is any higher than it is in other religions, or public schools for that matter. However, it is always trumpeted with great fanfare in the news media, because the Church is famously against things which are now considered 'human rights,' like access to abortion. This media focus gives the observer the impression that every priest is a child molester and pervert.

Catholic church fail.. Priests can't get married or have kids. How do they expect them to relate to families? Who want's the job? No sex? No girls? Hmm... who wants that job?????

I played two softball games for a local catholic church. They asked me. I show up and the priest is the team leader/captain or whatever. He was alarmingly gay and I was like WTF?? So on the second game the other team was a guy short and had to forfeit so I went and played for them and he was like WTF? We spanked them and he was having a homo-meltdown in the dugout. I thought who is letting this dude run the church??? They can't tell he's a flamer?

I thought the original reason for why Catholic priests could not get married was because the Church did not want any of their (church) property to fall into the hands of women if the priest died. I'm pretty sure if you're a married priest in another church and convert to Catholicism, then you can remain married.

I've met some good and some bad priests.

The one that conducted, or whatever you call it, my grandmothers funeral last January wore a hoodie and ratty sneakers at the cemetery.

I wanted to stomp a mudhole in his ass. Totally classless.

Born and raised Catholic, but only go to church for weddings and funerals. Mostly funerals.

Perhaps the pope isn't lying when he says that he's simply too mentally and physically exhausted to continue heading the church. Perhaps there's conflict at the top, and the cardinals want him gone. Perhaps he's resigning so his dirty laundry doesn't get aired in public. Who knows.

That said, I wasn't raised Catholic, though I've been to mass once and a Catholic funeral once also. Two of the most boring experiencs of my life.

I do love Catholic churches, though. I've visited most of Cincinnati's historic churches and they're quite beautiful. Here's a view of two I visited last year:

That's exactly why they can't get married anymore. Centuries ago, the church figured out that they were losing a lot of money with their clergy(usually very affluent people) passing money to their spouses and down to their children.

I visited Rome in 2010, and had the pleasure of witnessing the Pope's weekly Wednesday service in St. Peter's Square. What I was most impressed with was how many languages he was able to address worshipers in. AMAZING. He was pretty far away, but I had a decent zoom on my camera and got a few slightly blurry shots of him. I toured the Vatican Museum, and stood in the Sistine Chapel. I even snapped a forbidden pic of the famed ceiling. That trip to Rome was to this point my greatest travel experience.

I think we're used to Popes, no matter what, dying before they step down, which is why this is so shocking.

HBO started running this doc late last week. It was interesting to see the church's actions in these cases laid out in detail, with all of the player's roles exposed. Every case of abuse from the early 2000's crossed Ratzinger's (Pope Benedict) desk in his work for the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith. In fact, he ASKED for all of the cases. Of course, I wasn't shocked, because we knew the Vatican protected priests - if things got too hot regarding a priest in a particular parish, they simply transferred him to another instead of removing him. Still, it was enlightening to see exactly how big a part Benedict played.
