She wasn't going to meet another man specifically - remember, the story states she was supposed to be traveling with a friend, who backed out. She was an aspiring photographer, and wanted to take photographs. She made some contacts in Turkey via social media. She was fine until the day she was supposed to leave, so who knows what really happened - it's unclear if the contact she made was the person that killed her. In fact, the police tracked the guy down and questioned him, and he was released.

If anything, this is a lesson in how it can be dangerous for women to travel alone (at least attractive ones). As a man, I'd definitely be uncomfortable with my wife going overseas on a trip unless she was going to stay with family or good friends. As men, it's cool to make online contacts and meet up, but it's a different story for a woman to do the same in some parts of the world.

I feel bad for her husband and their children. That being said, it was extremely irresponsible for her to be traveling alone in a Muslim country, especially given that she has children at home. And that's assuming she wasn't going there to fuck this guy she met on the internet. If she was, then it's obviously even worse. I can think of plenty of interesting things to photograph in Istanbul. However, a mother of two traveling there alone is odd, to say the least.

Keep in mind Turkey is a major tourist destination. While it is a Muslim country, they have a secular government and many secular people. In Istanbul, you will see plenty of women walking around by themselves: Yes, Turkish women with head scarves but also Turkish women dressed in tight jeans and tank tops as well as tourists galore dressed every which way. I don't think Istanbul being "Muslim" makes it any more or less dangerous than any other city of its size. Whatever appeared in movies like Midnight Express is not the reality normal tourists will see.

Just like most places, if you go looking for trouble, you can certainly find it. I agree that she was likely there for some sketchy purpose. Either an affair or drugs. It could also be a combination of the two, where she was going to smuggle drugs for her boyfriend and something went wrong.

I really can't see this woman as a drug mule. I know it's fun to try to see some kind of conspiracy angle, but I think she was just an attractive woman, traveling alone, and something bad happened to her. It's definitely unusual for a married mother to be traveling without her family, but I know of couples that have taken separate vacations. She was an aspiring photographer, and maybe just a bit of a free spirit. I know we love to destroy chicks and their behavior, but I just don't see it here.
