Bill maher was watchable 5-7 years ago when his show was at least 1/3 comedy and 2/3 leftist propaganda. Unfortunately nowadays the split is about 95/5 and his job is basically a democratic spokesperson, nothing more.

He's also scared because its very obvious that he is probably going to be next in the metoo# shitfest. Single straight white democratic man that still talks about getting laid, makes ethnic jokes only heard on family guy and south park, does not believe islam is the greatest religion of all time, occasionally talks about political correctness ruining comedy, these are all big no-nos in the left and there are plenty of people ready to take him down.

He is by far the biggest selfish asshole in hollywood, only promotes agenda's that help him exclusively. His issues are: Weed because he is a pot-head, political correctness because he wants HBO to keep renewing his shitty show and he can keep making gay-ethnic jokes that would normally get a talk show host in network fired, british-austrilians taking jobs in hollywood because he doesn't want to be replaced by one, muslim censorship so that the executives at hbo don't shut him down over mob complaints, Social Media because the way that his show is structured is very difficult to cash in on a new business model the same way conan o'brien and james corden has + he is actually fucking lazy - why hire more people to add more segments when instead you can make outdated jokes from 1998 for your aging 63 year old demographic. In exchange for all this, he spends most of the show attacking republicans, christianity, trump, putin and whatever the dems are complaining about at the time of the show.

Also, i heard from a reliable source that his last negotiations at HBO were very difficult and he might have gotten pay cut to get the extension in exchange for letting him do more road trip standup so he can make up the difference.

I like Bill Maher. I don't have to agree on everything with someone to like them or think they're cool. I'd rather have a drink with Maher and bullshit about politics than many people on the right.
