Probably they want to encourage all women to have short hair so that they don't produce "unnecessary workload" for hair stylists who are now paid all the same.

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. I really love its politics, economy, ecological efforts... but in the field of gender relations, it is beyond fucked up.

Here in Swe girls used to get lower prices on taxis in the nights but that was deemed to be discriminatory pricing. Ha! Good example of gender equality working both ways.

^This is what will end up happening.

My hair is pretty damn long and I pay about $15 for a haircut plus $5 tip. I can see them charging women more because their cut has some styling to it and takes more skill and work to get it to look right. My hair is all the same length and I just get the ends trimmed so its clean and even. I'm in and out in 10 minutes usually.

I suspect that for most hairstylists, male customers are harder to acquire regardless of hair length or difficulty of cut. Men are offered discounts because they're more likely to just go get a clipper cut from the cheapest barber they can find.

Suppose you have 50 haircut slots in a week and each slot represents an equivalent amount of work no matter whether the customer is male or female. Each slot = 1 haircut. At $50/cut, you can fill 40 slots with female customers and 5 slots with male customers, leaving 5 empty slots with no customers. If you dropped the price for everyone to $45, you could fill the last 5 slots with 3 women and 2 men. But you'll be working harder and still only making $2,250. However, if you drop the price of male haircuts to $40, you can fill the last 5 slots with men and you'll bring in $2,400.

(1) $50 for everyone
$50 x 45 = $2,250
per-slot efficiency: $50

(2) $45 for everyone
$45 x 50 = $2,250
per-slot efficiency: $45

(3) $50 for women, $40 for men
$50 x 40 + $40 * 10 = $2,400
per-slot efficiency: $48

Scenario (3) is also known as price discrimination. Wikipedia calls it, specifically, third degree price discrimination. More common examples of market segmentation for price discrimination purposes are student discounts and location codes on movies.

This has been the reality in Finland since 2010. They cannot offer cheaper prices for men but they can charge different prices for the time it takes to cut the hair.

The term "left" has been bastardized to hell over the last 90 years. Modern liberals are rarely anything more than democratic socialists. Left-wing used to mean freedom from government coercion in all aspects of life. We know that sure as hell isn't true anymore. I suspect this doesn't matter at all. Very few barbershops are equipped to accommodate most female customers, so have very little to lose and possibly something to gain by offering them a very specific, gender-neutral service for a fixed fee. (eg. a prices based on length of hair).

It is probably classic barbershops that drive down the market price of men's haircuts.
