I feel so lucky regarding this. My parents have always been supportive in the fact that my goals in life are to travel, to never settle down, and to someday not work for 'the man.'

Another thing. Thankfully my mother almost never bugs me about giving her grandchildren. I feel lucky for that much alone. She's asked me about it once or twice but I always tell her my brother took care of that some years ago. He married a shrewd bitch and they had two children, after about five years they divorced and she gets $800.00 per month in child support. Oh, and she found a chump with kids of his own to help fix her baggage.

My mom says I'm still a puppy. Granted, I am young, but I take offense to being called a puppy. The only reason she says this is because I'm never in a serious relationship. There's a bunch of other stuff that is related but I don't care to mention it.

My dad's cool though. Anytime it's just me and him I'll tell him some stories and he seems to enjoy them.

im 28 and live in mexico, i have real estate holdings and investments which i could live off of. for work i am an english tutor. my parents arent concerned they just don´t like the inconvience of explaining my life to their friends/family who asks about me.

Can relate. My mom is always asking me "so what should I tell people if they ask me what you do?" I'm 38 so she has given up on me ever getting a 'career'. My mom is cool though since she left the UK in the 60's to hitch hike around America,ended up working on fishing boats out of San Frncisco and random shit so she understands the travel thing. She knows I don't do drugs and shit and I'm a good father to my daughter so that's enough for her.

My dad however is a dick about it. Because he is in his 60's and feels his best days are behind him he tries constantly to put me down and diminish everything I do. He won't ask me about my travels or anything I do because he hates to hear I'm living a life he'd like to be ble to. If he had not thrown his money away down the pub each week maybe he'd have some travel memories too. Very sad but i have stopped caring about his opinion. I love my life and that's all that matters.

I can relate also. I get this a lot from my parents & relatives and also from guys who got married young and are regretting it. The irony in this is that my dad told me that he has not had sex with my mom in 18yrs & he said he doesnt blame me for not getting married (obviously he changes his opinion when my mom is around). I dont have the patience for women who use sex as a bargaining chip.

I've always done things that make my parents proud. They speak well of me to their friends and other family members.

Bacon mate, seems to me like there's a fair old distance between you and your folks but not seeing them for 2 years is quite a long time. How often do you talk on the phone or skype them?

It sounds like they're biting at you because you've hurt them not seeing them for a while. When you have reunions like that, it's what happens. I've been there.

As long as I eat food my mother doesn't give a shit. She has never in my life asked me a sincere question about my life.

My basic need of food and "being alright" is enough. I've learned to deal with it.

Though I have supportive parents of my travels & future career goals, I tend to get a lot of judgemental guilt trips from some relatives including my sister where we apparently owe it to ourselves to "suffer" and "do everything by the book." Suffering or encountering bumps in the road for the sake of succeeding in your pursuits & goals is necessary but you lose a lot in life if you revolve all the key decisions in your life around "suffering for the sake of doing so" or "not feeling guilty," which many of my family members have done. It unfortunately makes sense because a lot of Asian people possess that trait haha.

Almost exact same thing with me man, I am 26 and was living in Mexico for 2 years, just recently came back to start the process of taking a job in SE Asia. They sat me down and railed me about how I am a dissapointment and a loser (I have a degree and quit a great paying sells job to travel.) They kicked me out of their house, knowing I have no money until I start this next job. Funny thing is, my dads on his 4th marrage to a woman on her 2nd, and my mom is on her 2nd to a man on his second. But I am the one making mistakes. Really it just re-enforced my believe that I really am doing things right.

I've been subjected to some pretty bad hate and negativity from my father. Each time I tell him about my plans for travel or business he puts me down by saying my plan won't work or that I should do something else. It's really beginning to fuck me up mentally.
