Whether they offer unusually long terms on their tourist visa or are simply really lax about you renewing over and over again, I'm curious about which countries are easiest to stay in long-term.

I know you can weasel 6 months out of Thailand with the 2-month double entry visa. Used to be you could just keep getting those back to back, but not sure how that's working these days (feel free to chime in here).

I think Laos always offers a simple renewal on their visa too.

Anyone have any anecdotes or discoveries to share?

Dominican Republic. You pay $10 when you enter the country and don't have to worry visas or anything like that. When you leave you pay a fine.

I believe Canada gives you a 6 month tourist visa with ability to extend. You'd go for Montreal, of course.

Philippines: you can extend the visa for almost 2 years without having to leave the country.
Russia: New visa changes with the US allowing 6 months in and then a border run. Supposedly this visa is good for 3 years. I haven't heard if this is easy or not.

Actually, for an American, you can get a residence visa in Germany and by proxy to all of the EU. You just have to show that you have enough money to live in Germany. For countries like the UK, you enroll in some half fake school and get a student visa. You can stay on a student visa for years I believe.

You can google it yourself. But from what I understand you can show up in Germany and just apply for a work permit/residence permit. If you want to work you can get a permit when you find a job or if you just wish to stay without working - proof of funds and you get a permit. We are talking about very minimal money to just be able to support yourself.
For Americans it's an open country and it has to do with regulations after WWII. Israelis also get this privilege. However, not Russians!

Get a German visa and then go live in Poland. A German residency/work visa is easy for Canadians as well (for ages 18 to 35)

The only catch is having to pay something like $500-$700 for medical insurance. Not so bad though.

Can you post info how it works for Americans. I thought the easy access ended under some agreement. I know USA militAry still has claim in certain areas.

the UK immigration is getting tough and student visas are a lot harder to get than just a few years ago

you can set up a company in czech republic and get a residence permit. total damage about 2000 euro or so
