True- this has happened to me as well. Which is why, if I'm going to try to bang an average looking girl, I won't be seen with her at my regular haunts. All it takes is one girl who knows you to see you with a lesser girl and she will inform other girls in her social circle ("I saw XY with this girl Saturday night-ewwww!") and they will all deny you.
However, the opposite is equally true- being seen with a hot girl greatly raises your desirability with other girls. Interesting discussion. I could come up with anecdotal evidence for both theories: getting laid by first being nice to fatties but also messing it up that way. My suspicion is that it depends on your projected status: if you are beyond doubt an attractive, desirable guy it will earn you points to be nice to the less fortunate. If your persona is less well-received or defined you might lower your perceived value by associating with low status females, following the saying that if you pick up garbage you end up smelling like garbage yourself...

I think dudes have to stop trying to put game in a box, as if things can only work one way and under certain conditions. Game, as it pertains to women, is fluid, thus it requires one to adapt to a myriad of situations and factors within those situations.
