Who has used this service? Was it worth the money?

My understanding is 23andMe analyzes your genes and tells you information about what diseases you're predisposed to, your heritage, etc. The cost is $100, you receive a kit and submit a saliva sample. Then they genotype you, it's not a full gene sequencing. I'm not a bio person so I don't fully understand their process.

I am hesitant because you have to give up a lot of personal information. I'm sure the results are not 100% accurate and I could see a scenario where an insurance company would deny someone coverage based on information that that person may be a likely candidate for some disease.

I am still curious though. If I do it I will submit a writeup.

Very interested. But completely not convinced that my DNA won't be accessible to the police and governments. I'll pass for now.

Yeah that'd be my biggest concern. It would be really interesting to do it though. If I could get my hands on some info as to what they compare your genome to I could probably do this myself.

I just read one of the two female cofounders is Sergey Brin's wife. Not sure about that connection to Google either since their privacy policy is clear as mud. Regardless of all that I just ordered a kit since I think it's valuable knowledge. I'll post my experience whenever I get the results. I don't think the police really care about my genes.

I read a report from a leading dna guy about this, cant for the life of me remember where I read it but he basically said save your money, it won't tell you anything that will be of any benefit to you.

I read a piece about the service and the bottomline was, it gives you a lot of useless info like 5% chance of getting colon cancer. This info is useless because you cant do anything about it.
