On the Criterion Collection DVD, there's an extra with a discussion between Roger Ebert and Martin Scorsese on the best films of the '90s. Ebert himself rates Hoop Dreams as the best film of the decade, and Marty doesn't exactly disagree!

I only recommend Hoop Dreams to basketball/sports fans and people comfortable with the inner city narrative. It is not for everyone. I think Siskel and Ebert slightly overrated it because it takes place in their home town of Chicago and they wanted to be politically correct.

It is one of my all time favorites but I wouldn't recommend it to my conservative friends who think the NBA is "too black".

I recommend "June 17th 1994". The beginning of reality tv from a sports perspective.

I also loved "The 16th Man". Those athletes said they were prepared to die to win the gold medal for their country. And, they meant it. Incredible!

Sport documentaries are as important to me as music and art. All the 30 for 30's" are works of art!

Nah, as you can see by the vids above they called it early on and Ebert to this day carries a torch for Hoops Dreams so I'd say he has genuine love for it.

Quite simply yes. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 98%, it won a Sundance Film Award, and it was overwhelmingly lauded by critics. The proprietors of the major award shows and movie critics are usually white, so its safe to say it transcended urban culture.From the NY Times:

Undefeated

It's about the coach of a high school football team in Memphis. But mostly it's about his efforts to make the team give a shit about life.





There are two types of documentaries. The first is where the filmmakers sit down the team and have them reminisce about the good ole days. The second is where they film the people as it is happening. I find the second type (Hoop Dreams) more compelling than the first (ESPN 30 for 30). Undefeated is the second type.

Not sure if the Dirk Docu made it to the US. As a German and as a basketball player I have so much respect for his game and hustle. If you haven't seen it, check it out.
