One of Hemingway's finest stories about his favorite theme of courage under fire. Here's a choice quote:

Quote: Be a damn fire eater now. He’d seen it in the war work the same way. More of a change than any loss of virginity. Fear gone like an operation. Something else grew in its place. Main thing a man had. Made him into a man. Women knew it too. No bloody fear.

One of the least sympathetic female characters in that one too.

Hemingway's female characters are always so funny. You couldn't get away with it today, not that they're any less true.
