HONG KONG (Reuters) - Women can tell with some accuracy whether an unfamiliar male is faithful simply by looking at his face, but men seem to lack the same ability when checking out women, according to an Australian study published on Wednesday.

In a paper that appeared in the journal Biology Letters, the researchers found that women tended to make that judgement based on how masculine-looking the man was.

"Women's ratings of unfaithfulness showed small-moderate, significant correlations with measures of actual infidelity," wrote the team, led by Gillian Rhodes at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders at the University of Western Australia in Perth.

"More masculine-looking men (were) rated as more probable to be unfaithful and having a sexual history of being more unfaithful."

Attractiveness was not a factor in the women making the link.

In the study, 34 men and 34 women were shown colour photographs of 189 Caucasian adult faces and asked to rate them for faithfulness.

The researchers compared their answers to the self-reported sexual histories of the 189 individuals and found that the women participants were better able to tell who was faithful and who was not.

"We provide the first evidence that faithfulness judgements, based solely on facial appearance, have a kernel of truth," they wrote in the paper.

Men, on the other hand, seemed to have no clue. They tended to perceive attractive, feminine women to be unfaithful, when there was no evidence that they were, the scientists noted.

Faithfulness is seen as important in the context of sexual relationships and mate choice, the scientists wrote in the paper. Men with unfaithful partners risk raising another man's child, while women with unfaithful partners risk losing some, or even all, parental and other resources to competitors.

I've also seen studies that women are more likely to have short-term sexual relations with a guy that has an alpha face(masculine) and might be more prone to settle down with a guy that has a beta face. So even though they see the alpha male face as being a sign of a cheater, they are also going to be more likely to fuck him.

Tangentially, I saw a study that showed that people can discern the face of criminals with a surprising amount of accuracy. I think there's a similar reasoning at work.

Btw, does anyone know if a full beard is an indicator of strong testosterone? I know that many Asian guys cannot grow a full beard, there's tends to be patchy at best and Asian men have the lowest testosterone of all.

Body hair growth can definitely be a sign of high testosterone levels. I've been seeing commercials for a new testosterone treatment for men that is applied like roll-on deodorant - in the armpits. One of the warnings is for women to avoid exposure, and excessive body hair growth is one of the possible signs of exposure. I'm not sure if heavy facial hair is a guaranteed sign of high T, but I can't think of anyone from my experience that had facial hair without body hair also.

Right. And since slut has until at least recently had negative connotations, then it's explicable why only women have been called sluts.

Even when I was in high school in the late 90's, when I or any other guy was called by girls a slut (and it was only girls, no man would call another man a slut or man-slut) it was always a compliment.

I recently read that women are sexually attracted to men who have had lots of sexual encounters. Makes sense because if a man gets a lot of women, that must be a sign that he is high quality, other women have already evalued and tested him etc.

No shit, this article tells us what we already know. Cheating for the sexes is directly correlated to the accessibility of pussy for the man, and the level of happiness of the woman.

For a man - opportunity matters and to a lesser degree happiness. The man is more worried about getting caught.

I'm going to step in and venture a guess that most women overuse the "he's a cheater" statement on any masculine guy and is just a blanket response. I want to know how many times they've called someone a cheater and was a cheater, along with how many cheaters there were in the study. This is a classic experimentation trick to promote whatever opinion you want.
