Yea man I heard about it, it's all over the news. I hope the Chiefs win this Sunday against the Panthers for him, although what he did was awful.

I'm interested in seeing if they find out he had something wrong with his brain from playing football. For the sake of the game I hope not. I didn't read the article. Did it say that he killed his girl in front of her mother and himself in front of management? Imagine being Crenell or the GM. How the hell do you go about doing your job tomorrow?

You're assuming that the small child is, in fact, HIS child.

Three possibilities here, not necessarily mutually exclusive.

1. Cuckolded.
2. Getting dumped.
3. Hellion spawn not HIS hellion spawn.

Wouldn't it be something if the hellion spawn was the hellion spawn of one of Belcher's teammates when he thought it was his all along?

I think it would be going too far to assume that this was because she did something. Most likely it is just mental illness on his side - which surely raises the question of why a guy with violent tendencies and mental illness is attractive enough to have a girlfriend at all, but not whether she did something to provoke it.

As someone who has dealt with brain issues that may have been the result of football, I can tell you that brain issues (and psychological issues stemming from them) are not that rare at the highest levels of the game. When I first read about this case, my immediate suspicion related to a psychological issue tied to past brain trauma.

I was fortunate not to have had any real side effects psychologically or otherwise (I didn't take that many hits, my problem was easily corrected, fully recovered now), but it is not uncommon for a guy who has played a lot more ball than I did (ex: 4-year starter in major college, NFL player, etc) to take many more hits and just never be the same. And yes, it can drive some of them nuts.

Sad situation all around. When I woke up this morning I read about it on the news, the police hadn't even released the player's identity yet. Apparently it was the linebacker Javon Belcher.

That was my first thought. Crazy situation.

It's sickening because this player safety initiative we're seeing from the NFL is nothing more than a PR stunt. This is the second NFL linebacker that's killed himself this year...let's see if they set forth any protections for the defensive players or just make another rule protecting their cash cows (QBs and WRs).

Come on man. These three things happen to plenty of men and they don't murder anyone or kill themselves. This guy was obviously fucked in the head, more likely than not from accumulating so many hits over the years. Head injuries can really fuck with your personality and behavior. I've seen it multiple times first hand. I'm willing to bet ten or so years down the road there's going to be a ton of lawsuits against the NFL by players who have permanently injured brains.

Aside from the possibility that the sense had literally been knocked out of his head, there's also the possibility that he and his chick were having some serious disagreements.

The girl was his "baby momma". Anyone with knowledge of these types of relationships will tell you that a lot of these women can create hell for these (admittedly naive/stupid) dudes. She could have threatened to ruin him with child support and a host of other issues (ex: he may have been supporting many other people). These men are meal tickets for these women and their families, and they'll create hell if they feel for whatever reason that they may lose out. His thinking of "getting another chick" (or looking like he might) would be more than enough to set these chicks off.

This is no excuse for what he did (the kid suffers here more than anyone), but this type of drama is not uncommon-baby mamma and her family make a fuss, dudes has issues, trouble ensues (fight, dui, missed child support, etc). In this case, the trouble could have just went much further than usual, perhaps due to psychological issues. I suppose roids are a possibility there.

way less often is it because the guy is "just crazy" or concussion or any other thing.

this has to do with the girlfriend specifically and something that she did or was doing. Not blaming the victim, but this is reality.

Samseau, rationalize, CMan, Giovonny, I know that chicks dig jerks (violent jerks the most of all). I just can't help but be staggered by that fact when it rears its ugly head. It's the most painful aspect of the modern sexual market.

I would suspect that the reason for the higher rates of suicide is in part due to Steroids/ drugs which effect their hormones and immune system. Another factor albeit perhaps silly, is that these people live reverse lifes. Most people work towards something which they work 20 or 30 years for in order to peak in their careers. These guys start out with it all and then lose it all.

It's easy to write guys like this off as a psychopath, but I think it takes more than a getting hit in sports to drive a man to these ends. It's always a series of events, never an isolated event, that makes people act in desperation. And I think no matter who you are, there's a series of events that will drive you over the edge.
