You're assuming that the small child is, in fact, HIS child.
Three possibilities here, not necessarily mutually exclusive.
1. Cuckolded.
2. Getting dumped.
3. Hellion spawn not HIS hellion spawn.
Wouldn't it be something if the hellion spawn was the hellion spawn of one of Belcher's teammates when he thought it was his all along?

As someone who has dealt with brain issues that may have been the result of football, I can tell you that brain issues (and psychological issues stemming from them) are not that rare at the highest levels of the game. When I first read about this case, my immediate suspicion related to a psychological issue tied to past brain trauma.
I was fortunate not to have had any real side effects psychologically or otherwise (I didn't take that many hits, my problem was easily corrected, fully recovered now), but it is not uncommon for a guy who has played a lot more ball than I did (ex: 4-year starter in major college, NFL player, etc) to take many more hits and just never be the same. And yes, it can drive some of them nuts.

Aside from the possibility that the sense had literally been knocked out of his head, there's also the possibility that he and his chick were having some serious disagreements.
The girl was his "baby momma". Anyone with knowledge of these types of relationships will tell you that a lot of these women can create hell for these (admittedly naive/stupid) dudes. She could have threatened to ruin him with child support and a host of other issues (ex: he may have been supporting many other people). These men are meal tickets for these women and their families, and they'll create hell if they feel for whatever reason that they may lose out. His thinking of "getting another chick" (or looking like he might) would be more than enough to set these chicks off.
This is no excuse for what he did (the kid suffers here more than anyone), but this type of drama is not uncommon-baby mamma and her family make a fuss, dudes has issues, trouble ensues (fight, dui, missed child support, etc). In this case, the trouble could have just went much further than usual, perhaps due to psychological issues. I suppose roids are a possibility there.

BINGO !
Those three reason are usually the top three when a man kills his mate........(see OJ...)
way less often is it because the guy is "just crazy" or concussion or any other thing.
this has to do with the girlfriend specifically and something that she did or was doing. Not blaming the victim, but this is reality.

At any given time? Around 2100 or so, give or take a few dozen (counting active rosters, inactive lists, practice squads, injured reserves, etc).

The annual male suicide rate per 100,000 in the United States is 19.2 (as of 2011).
Perhaps my calculations are wrong, but at that rate, one suicide every three years among NFL players would be average.

Four Current Or Former NFL Players Have Committed Suicide In The Last Eight Months
"Here's a timeline:
In April, former Atlanta Falcons player Ray Easterling shot himself. He was 62, and an autopsy found that he had the degenerative brain disease CTE that's believed to be caused by head trauma.
In May, former San Diego Chargers player Junior Seau shot himself in the chest. He was 43.
In July, Tennessee Titans wide receiver OJ Murdock shot himself. He was 25.
Today, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot himself in the parking lot of the team's practice facility after allegedly killing his girlfriend in front of his three-month-old daughter.
The brain disease CTE is known to cause erratic behavior, but it's unclear if all of these players were afflicted with that condition.
No matter the cause, it's a disturbing trend."
