She wanted to show me her office, picked me up at the BTS station and we drove around in circles for half an hour. We finally got into the garage of her office building where we were questioned by the security guy and I got a "visitor" sticker. On her floor, she introduced me to countless people who all awkwardly shook my hand and spoke to me in Thai. So much for an after hour quickie: the office was full of people, an open room, an insurance sales place as far as I could tell. Going back down, she made me wait for her for 20 minutes in a coffee place as she needed to do some more work. When I thought it was finally time to go she asked me to go back upstairs to wait in the "meeting room" for another 30 minutes. This room featured chairs, a small podium, a slide show of the company history and a stereo playing techno in front of a table with what looked like raffle prizes. Without warning, my date was seated behind me in some "achievement" chair, the room filled with 100 to 120 people who all stared at me and some guy went on stage, the music being pitched high, low, high low by the office dj. He spoke in Thai, then pointed at me and asked me to come up. I had no idea what this was about but could not really bow out. Even if I had run away the building required me to leave with my date (security tag). I bumbled up front, standing there in jeans and a polo shirt in front of people wearing business formal who giggled and stared at me. I had to speak into a microphone and answer questions about my name and where I was from, half of which I did not understand. The "showmaster" was awfully amused and acted like an infomercial guy. He asked me "you like Thai wooooman, ehhhh?" which got the room to giggle and made my date frown. How do you answer that question properly without sounding mean or like a whoremonger? I said "only one, that one", pointing at my date. Now to the worst part. Infomercial guy: " What song you want to sing?" Me: "aehh no, I don't sing well". "Ahhhh, okay, I choose for youuu". The lights went out except for a spot on me and they were pumping gangnam style. I stood there like the village idiot, not sure what to do. The guy then poked me in the chest and moved my arms for me. I somehow managed to play along and do a bit of karaoke (try the lyrics in Korean!) and saw a bunch of little lights in the audience. No, they were not lighters but the control lights of smart phone cameras. They all had a jolly good time filming me as the attraction of the Friday afternoon sales award festivities..... I should search "farang gangnam style" on youtube later, I am sure this will not remain private with that many cameras.
After the music show they went on, awarding everybody and their mother prizes, then standing up, making some kind of very repetitive pledge for 10 minutes ("hah la ha la kaaaa" again and again). This whole outift was an infomercial/ scientology/ kids' birthday clown show rolled into one and took 2 hours.
After escaping my date wanted to go out with me and her friend but asked me if I needed a shower first since the meeting room had been hot. She would drive me and wait in the lobby. This was the final straw for me. Obviously, she was not eager to come into my room and had also asked me to go to church with her on Sunday.... almost a no-lay guarantee now. I got her to drop me off at a BTS station instead, saying I would meet her a couple of hours later if I was not too tired which of course I turned out to be.
What a waste of an afternoon in BKK! Fortunately, I had set up another date at Terminal 21 for 7 o clock to which I arrived late. The girl looked a bit rough but doable, slightly older than I had hoped. We went to have dinner and she was very pleasant, friendly but had odd scars on her chest. She had needed 3 hours to get to T21 and I felt bad I had almost ditched her. I somehow did not feel like pressing for a same night lay and let her go home. She txted me 10 minutes later that the skytrain was full and I answered she could stay at my place. By then she had already boarded but txted back "I hope we meet again soon, please clear your bed for me". Shall do.
The "you like Thai ladies" joke is extremely typical of the Thais and their sense of humor - they'll be saying it a lot to you, especially if seen with Thai women, but even if not, so get used to it. Taking it seriously and acting awkward is the worst way to handle it possible. Just laugh it off - shit, learn how to accept that it's funny.
As for Gagnam style, you should have busted a little jig. Thais don't dance much and they would have thought it was absolutely hilarious!
I honestly feel sorry for you, Man. That could have been one of the most fun, hilarious, and random experiences of your trip to Bangkok, you could have used it as a chance to connect with locals, you could have felt out the business networking possibilities, you could have had everyone rolling with an actual attempt to sing, and all you can do is is moan and groan about a girl.
There will be plenty of chances to get laid in the future, especially in Thailand.
Here's another way you could have handled it, given a change in mindset. A similar thing happened to me one time when I accompanied a Thai friend from Chiang Mai to Northern Laos for a free ride to get my visa. He was a member of Zhulian, which is a popular network marketing company in Southeast Asia (he's done so well with it that he clears about $3K per month, which is solid for someone born lower-class Thai, and they've even bought him a nice car).
Anyhow, I ended up in a similar meeting and got called up to be presented and to talk, etc. Yeah it was awkward but I just fell back on the typical shit that gets Thais laughing, made fun of their song and their Zhulian cult in a light-natured way, and got everyone busting up. You feel like a monkey on display but hey this is travel. You're a stranger in their midst and they're introducing you in their own way.
The Zhulian peeps loved me and invited me to a huge temple party that night. Plenty of beer and Laos girls asking me to dance in their fucked-up traditional line-dance way and I loved it. Not a foreigner to be spotted in the whole town while I was there. I slept at this Laos person's house, showering with a bucket of cold water.
A day or two later, the top-ranking Zhulian guys took me off to a business dinner at this Laos village - an old couple that were obviously important in the area but to our standards very, very poor. I didn't understand a word of what was said at the dinner but I ate some amazing home-cooked food and everyone laughed that I could rock the homemade whiskey with them. Everyone doted over me like I was some kind of celebrity all because I was just some foreigner off the beaten track.
It was an amazing peek into Laos culture and one of my best travel experiences. Sure, I got bored after about a week and had to hit the road, but I soaked it up for what it was worth.
I went on a few more of their trips to other places, and for years after that while living in Chiang Mai, the Laos guys who visited would make sure my Thai friend drug me out to the clubs with them to party. My point is that you have to embrace the little things that happen to you - sometimes it's awkward and sometimes it's boring but this is is what travel is all about.
Now I understand you were caught off guard as you were expecting a date, but I personally would rethink what I want out of life and what I want out of travel if all that mattered to me anymore was another notch. Sometimes things go wrong abroad, and you make the most out of it. Also, I wouldn't be so hard on the girl. She was trying to show off and act prestigious but the whole thing got carried away by the limits of her own culture - Thai "time," social expectations, etc.
You're in another country and culture. Enjoy it for what it's worth.
