RE: Thailand challenge
Guys the 4 baht is at 7-11. This is not a bargain shop. Honestly I got scammed v little because I would keep a very close watch. Taxi I woul pull up my gps and then tell him no cheating. The taxi driver stopped smiling each time. Lmao.

Another example we are at seafood restaurant at 5am and bill had prices different than menu. Told Thai girl. She said I was wrong. She screams at waitress to recheck bill. Magical 70 baht discount haha

Ummm, I'd say that in the long run you'd be far better of laughing at noticing something like that while smiling and saying "I can't read these coins how much is this one and this one I have not learned". You should always give them an "out" to save face. The fact that you guys seem to attract these scams is likely because you are so unflinchingly western minded = obvious tourists.

RE: Thailand challenge
I think the best way to deal with the 'scams' is to get enough income in your life so that getting 'ripped' off for $5-$10 USD a day just makes you laugh. I like enterprising people ( I am one of them). Maybe making a few extra K a month will help you obtain this kind of mindset?

For semi-pro's, shoring will eventually bite you in the ass. Attempt it enough and eventually you will have some kind of problem. These people are poor (most) and eventually have to send some money home to buy their 6 siblings rice even if they meet Casanova the football player every night. Have you ever been to their rooms? Its like 4-5 people living in a 10 sq meter space (so they can save/make money). Free 7-11 milk and street food just aint going to cut it every night. If you want to bang free girls in BKK then you are going to most likely have to use TF, or go to non-pro spots like RCA etc and put in some work.

My 2 cents. Love Bangkok!

RE: Thailand challenge
Truedat, you might feel good about being "able to afford " being ripped off but to Thais it means you are seen as stupid and you are a laughingstock. If you give off the vibe that it is ok a few hundred baht fast become hundreds of thousands. DVy met a lady who was taken for 30k at the airport.I would not take pride in being a chump and calling it enterprising is just plain shortsighted. As mentioned before, the scams made me just avoid a lot of places and stuff altogether that a truly enterprising guy could have profited from handsomely. biz 101: retaining customers is cheaper than gaining new ones. By scamming me out of a few baht they forewent thousands more in potential tips and earnings. If scamming and cheating were such great enterprise how come the more advanced countries here in Asia do not do it? I see a strong negative correlation between bribery/ scamming and development. Places like Japan, Singapore etc lead he way simply because their culture does not endorse ripoff and thereby encourages investment and a good business climate.

RE: Thailand challenge
Asaxon, well said. Trudat, as has been mentioned a few times it isnt about the money. I make very good money. I tip well, routinely buy more than my share of food/drinks when I'm with friends, because honestly I can afford it, the money doesn't mean much to me, and those people usually need it more than me. Regardless of what you think I would love to help these places get thier shit together economy wise. Economies grow when mutual win/wins are established. You drive me around quickly and via that shortest route, and I will pay you 25% more than you'd get from a local person. Give me a good $1 haircut, I'll tip you 100%. You do that by making it more profitable to be straight shooting and honest. I reward that behaviour with generous tips, and call out the shiftyness. I think that's all you can do. Here it seemed the win/lose, or the lose/lose was more popular.

Trudat, where do you draw the line? You get held up at knife point and robbed? "Well I can afford it so it's no big deal... Oh those foreigners and their shenannigans!"

RE: Thailand challenge
I just don't give that tourist vibe out. In fact I purposefully scowl at the staff like upper class Thai people do and ask him in Thai taolai kap( how much please?). Guys I'm not attacking Thai. Just giving u the heads up. I am a dentist and can afford these trifles. It's truly about respect to me. When they don't cheat I leave a fat tip. I say thank you to everybody in Thai and swadeekap when I enter.

I had a discussion w my hisp Thai friends and they agreed stay away from Sukhumvit and you lower the frequency of this happening. But Sukhumvit is the prime of action. It's close to RCA and thong lo. Bangkok traffic is terrible and taxis a bitch. I can bargain in Thai and speak Thai on which street to go and still it's a nightmare. Lol, one dude agreed to meter than drove 30 ft and took out a map. Come on, if you don't know Sukhumvit you are retarded.

This is a Thai endemic issue that is excarbated by tourists who allow it much like American women who scream girl power!

Maybe it gets worse with high season...

@trudat semipris and pros will go with you free if thry like you. Hell first night 1 thai pro offered to go with me for free. I declined. TF girls who are fly still get a lot of attention. Probably 60-70 messages a day. I pick better quality off the street and bits and chilling than tf. Lmao, my phone has between 25-30 new numbers off the street in my last week of Bkk/ Chiang mai.

I will repeat myself again if you can line up a stable of 5-6 semi gf like travel hardcore you will avoid weekday clubs. But I came in cold and going out was the most efficient way.

Break it down then. Where do you guys go to pull during the week...

RE: Thailand challenge
I have been pipelining decently and have met some decent chick that has a well off family, Shes pretty cool. Educated, been to Europe and all that. She said she can pick me up from the airport and take me to my hotel/ help me find a good hotel. I am not sure if this is a good idea or not because I have about 5 others anticipating my arrival and would like to not have the hassle to get out of being trapped to one. Being honest I have never had to juggle 5+ girls before. I was vague and just told most of them I was arriving late January and didn't give an exact date so I'm not totally exposed.

Do not let her pick you up! See what happened to me! Girls in Thailand like to monopolize you quickly and you will have no choice but to cut off ties or give in to oneitis if you let her get the foot in the door. She will show up unannounced, snag keys and leave stuff at your place in no time... Unless you are looking for a gf experience this could be disastrous. If she finds out you are "cheating" you will be in deep trouble!

Haha I definitely don't want to get the ''Bangkok Haircut''. You're right tho, that unannounced showing up would be creepy. How did you make it clear for them not to get too comfortable? Like you said on one of your posts its hard to boot the chick when she's making it her goal to take care of you in every way.

@Kdog - I would NOT have her pick you up.

I am sure you are wanting to get straight to fucking when you land but I would say try to get yourself sorted out. Take care of yourself for a day and get adjusted.

You will be fucking girls all you want. Sometimes keeping your health and energy high is the hardest part with all the drinking, late nights, and constant fucking.

Don't let any one girl get her hooks into you to soon. You will be a different man in a week or two after you get used to how life works in BKK.

Good luck and keep us updated on the stories.

Thanks for putting me in perspective guys! I was just thinking more on the convenience side after a 20 hour flight didn't think it quite through. Good thing I was vague with the arrival dates...(plus these chicks are pretty gullible once you get past their shit tests.)

RE: Thailand challenge
I left 1 story out because I was typing on my iphone. This is 2 beers in and 1 vodka soda. So i am barely tipsy.

So, back at Q bar. I split up w/my group and went upstairs on the patio. Then came back down the stairs. The floors are black and the tables are clear or black. I sidestep a group of slowing moving thai group on the stairs and then i hear a crack.

Boom-crash-smash. I fall down and i heard glass shattering. I end up on my ass and i fall unto the floor with my arms flailing. I was very confused, but then I look around. Apparently, I had stepped unto somebody's empty table and shattered it. Lol. Im sitting on my ass in the middle of broken glass and wailing about because i was trying to catch my balance. They ask me if I am ok, and I bounce out quick so I dont get kicked out of the Q bar.

Go downstairs and swoop girl as mentioned in previous post. My thigh has a giant ass bruise on one side still 2-days later.

I came with zero thai and 1 thai hi-so friend I knew from LA.

In constrast, I left w/transactional thai and tons of #s that I didnt even have time to call. Met some great friends and had some great memories- 9 ppl on a tuk-tuk, Travel-hardcore's new words- "favela points", "tres objects", Asaxon analytical breakdown of thai culture and scams. the constant scams that you can't help but laugh at.

The thing is you got to take the whole culture in and just smile and laugh it off. In fact, while I might seem grumpy and disgruntled, I looked forward to being scammed. It was a constant game to play, I just loved looking in their faces and spitting out "You cheating" and pointing my finger in their face and them removing that shit-eating scam smile off their faces. It honestly made my nights/days. Playing pool w/hookers, hustlers, tourists and playboys. Shoring was an interesting transaction and a real insight in thai culture- what guys they fuck because they like him/potential long-term or just for money (mabye no difference).I loved the street-food and the thai women. I wouldn't take back this experience for anything.

I wish you playboys the best of luck in Asia, and a big shout-out to my boys still holding down the fort in BKK/Chiang Mai. To all you incoming/living there, I hope you got some interesting new perspective on this, and try to keep an open mind about it. I promise you thailand will give you more than you expected, if you just roll with it.

2 weeks Thailand/1 week Taiwan $breakdown - 1.2k personal expenses, 1,3k for roundtrip flights, about 1.3k for hotels. This is living like a king (4/5 star hotels in prime locations). Money paid to girls for hooking- ZERO, but i had 1 cheap 3-year old broken laptop. Ehh, Ill take it

Total tally- 13 girls in 20 days. This is with jetlag, my cousin visiting my over the weekend in Taipei, and some chill nights in Chiang Mai. Pretty solid.

Wow, DVY, I really don't want to be a hard case about this stuff, but Man, I really need to call you out on this because the behavior you're advising is not just bad advice but very dangerous advice!

I completely agree that scams are a problem, especially in the touristy areas of Thailand. I also agree that you should not just accept it when people scam you.

But hollering, raising your voice, and acting angry is the worst thing you can do - any basic book on Thai culture will tell you this. Yes, in the majority of cases, you'll essentially "shame" the Thai into giving up, but keep doing this and sooner or later and I shit you not someone will attack you.

It might just be a claw or fist or a foot, but in Thailand a seemingly meek and normal person who you don't even feel had a reason, based on your own cultural paradigm, may also straight up shank you or smash something over your head - and they will make it a point to wait for that very second when you don't expect it. I'm not kidding here. I'm not fear mongering. People get poisoned over insults. People get shot over what seems like nothing to us. This is not a Western country and tempers in Thailand simmer below the surface and when they finally explode they are very, very extreme.

As for the taxi situation, again, I understand it's a hassle. There's a simple solution. You find one or two taxi drivers you trust, who never scam you, and you call them each and every time you go out. Keep them shits on speed dial - when you find a good one, you'll find they appreciate the repeat business (and tips). Or, you hire someone with an air-conditioned van to drive you around.

I'm not going to pilfer through this thread and attempt to call out every piece of misinformation, point out every mistake, or answer every concern people have made here. After all, making these mistakes is an inevitable part of world travel.

I agree Thailand has its issues and have mentioned this myself in many threads. It's not a place everyone will like, and there's definitely a right and a wrong way to approach the place. For those who would rather move on to another place, reading this thread it's clear why you had the experiences you did, but I also completely respect and understand your resolution that Thailand is not a place you would want to be long-term. It definitely has its dark side.

That said, there are definitely ways to experience it without a lot of the bull, though you'll never avoid it all.

Most of all, I definitely have to warn anyone going there to not react to the scams with anger or aggression, even of a vocal nature. I don't care how tough someone thinks they are either; it's really a recipe for disaster. And like many have pointed out in this and other threads, it'll never be just them you're fighting. Thais who see a Thai stranger fighting a farang stranger will jump the farang even with no reason to feel the farang started it. Not all of them will, of course, but enough that you may or may not wake up in a hospital...

Do your best to smile. It's the way things are done. And if haggling, and you should haggle for a fair price, make it a joke. Make it a friendly banter, even when you want to wring their skinny neck.

If they get rude or aggressive or refuse to stop cheating you, that doesn't give you a free ticket to respond in turn. Fuck being fair - life is not fair, especially in Southeast Asia. Instead, own the choice to turn and walk away. Go somewhere else to spend your money, like a smart Thai person would do.

You're not in Kansas anymore, Fellas.

RE: Thailand challenge
@ Beyond Borders- you are right in a way. I would only do this to taxi-cab drivers and people who worked in service industry who cheated me. I agree that the Thai have notorious tempers.

Let me revise.... have you seen how the Thai people talk to the service staff? Maybe its just bangkok, but you if you act too nice, they take advantage more often than not. The tone is a sharp tone, with a moderate-high voice. Scream is perhaps not the right word.

Caveat, you need some COMMON SENSE. Dont do this when people are drinking. Best to walk away, and I did that plenty of times when it was dark and I was alone.

Perhaps, I gave a statement that you took 100% literally. I would do this during the day and at safe places where you can argue with them over the bill. If it truly came down to it, I would just walk away and I did plenty of times. Many times the thai will tell you to leave, and that your cue.

As a rule, I got scammed much more when I was walking around w/my white friends than not.

I appreciate your feedback Beyond Borders.

If you wish to avoid this, stick to the smaller towns. Chiang mai was great. I had dinner w/this thai family that invited me in. We had some laughs and they invited me back anytime. Honestly, I think its good to stand up for yourself even in Thailand, but dont physically fight with anybody. Dont argue with drunk Thai people.

Honestly just imagine you are in a ghetto with poor-asian people and you will do fine. But 7-11 (or other reputable store), charging you different prices...thats not acceptable to me. Its as if you found an extra item on your receipt, you would demand a rebate immediately.

I'd still advise being very careful with it.

Quote:Let me revise.... have you seen how the Thai people talk to the service staff? Maybe its just bangkok, but you if you act too nice, they take advantage more often than not. The tone is a sharp tone, with a moderate-high voice. Scream is perhaps not the right word.

I do know what tone you mean, and I've seen some Thai people do this. It's also important to remember, however, that they completely understand their culture in ways that we would not in a while lifetime. They know when they've gotten to the point of walking on eggshells with someone, and if violence was on the way, they are much more suited to read the body language correctly enough to restore face that was taken away and back off subtly, even as a farang would still be sitting there oblivious there was any real tension in the air.

The other thing to remember is the xenophobic attitude of the Thais - especially pertaining the added danger of being a Westerner in an altercation with a Thai. If a Thai gets into an altercation with a Thai, they can somewhat rest assured someone will intervene - though even then people will look the other direction if it gets bad enough. With us though, we have the danger of getting attacked by not only the person we offended, but bystanders as well.

For these two reasons, mimicking what rich Thais do, while sensible at face value, may also be a bit too much like playing with fire.

Quote:Caveat, you need some COMMON SENSE. Dont do this when people are drinking. Best to walk away, and I did that plenty of times when it was dark and I was alone.

Certainly. Things do gain intensity with alcohol, but I would assert that the risk is still there when everyone is sober and all seems calm.

Perhaps you're right and I did take it too literally. If so, I'm glad I did because I could see someone else reading it wrong as well and slipping up when in Thailand. In this case, I felt it necessary to speak up to keep that from happening.

Quote:If it truly came down to it, I would just walk away and I did plenty of times. Many times the thai will tell you to leave, and that your cue.

Absolutely - time to go!

Quote:As a rule, I got scammed much more when I was walking around w/my white friends than not.

Definitely. It's a bitch. Yet another reason to veer off the beaten track and mingle with the locals. Smile

Quote: I appreciate your feedback Beyond Borders.

Thanks. I appreciate you not taking it too personally.

Quote:Honestly just imagine you are in a ghetto with poor-asian people and you will do fine.

That's a great way to put it. It's good to know that you're always in a dangerous neighborhood in Thailand. It's the Compton of Asia. lol Again, I don't want to fear-monger or scare anyone away from the place. Just use the same basic common sense you'd use in a dangerous neighborhood in America where you are an outsider, or of a different race than the people who live in that neighborhood. It's easy to get complacent when everyone seems smaller than you and is smiling.

Don't. Use your street smarts.

Quote:But 7-11 (or other reputable store), charging you different prices...thats not acceptable to me. Its as if you found an extra item on your receipt, you would demand a rebate immediately.

For sure. It isn't acceptable at all, and you're 100% right not to accept it. Just be cautious about the way you go about doing that is all I'm saying. I'm going to assume by your post that I took you wrong and that you know exactly what you're doing; let's just let this be a heads up to anyone who is a newbie in town.

RE: Thailand challenge
Let me give another example. You are at a bar. Order a vodka/coke. The bartender fills it up to the brim with soda then adds 2 drops of vodka. The correct response is not to yell at him (drinking situations are always not wise to be angry), but to give him a WTF look and say no vodka in that and raise your eyebrows at him. This happened 2-3 times in my week at BKK. Everytime bartender would pour out 1/4 of the soda and add vodka.

Tuk-tuk driver says I give you ride for 250 baht to hotel. Do you yell at him "no cheating?" (no way). Just walk homie.

But if you get in a cab and you pop your GPS up. The guy is going smooth and he decides to long-shore you for a bigger fare by making a right instead of left. Man you tap him in the shoulder. Give him a strict "no-cheating" and show him your GPS.

I understand Beyond Borders concern with taking all of my advice at 100% face value, but understand that I enjoy bargaining with them. I enjoy when they try to cheat me, and I catch them. The look on their faces is priceless when I bust out my phone GPS and they realize oh shit, im caught. Thats what makes me laugh everytime. Its a funny moment because its sad and desperate on their part, and its truly disrespectufl to tourists. They will never fight you if you bring it up this way. With street vendors, I would just walk.

Oh, and as mentioned before. I am hafl-asian. I look like a leukrang aka half-thai. I can get away with it. =)

WIA- For most of men, our time being masters of our own fate, kings in our own castles is short. Even those of us in the game will eventually succumb to ease of servitude rather than deal with the malaise of solitude

RE: Thailand challenge
Last update: I have arrived back in farangland. The trip definitely turned out interesting and the first few days in Thailand seem like they took place months ago. Meeting dozens of girls, navigating the country etc can be strenuous but was worth it even if the scamming issue was slightly bothersome. Some of my pre-trip notions about the culture and people have changed a bit, most of them were confirmed, however, both good and bad. I still cannot say that I have caught full "yellow fever". I do find Thai girls more attractive than I did before though and can completely understand the appeal of being with a nurturing, feminine Asian woman. Just keep in mind that in the end, they, like western girls, are in it for themselves and their families, they just go about it in a different way- the "smiles way" which is friendly on the surface but can be enigmatic and hard to decipher in its true nature and intent.
Will I go back to Thailand? This is hard to answer. I suspect I will because of its climate and comparatively westernized offerings it is a good winter destination. Will I ever be a Thailand addict like some farang who speak Thai, have Thai tattoos and delude themselves into thinking they fully understand the country? Definitely not. The jibberish emails I am getting fom the shopgirl right now illustrate how hard it is to convey even basic concepts, be it a language or culture barrier.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. It was a great motivator to keep chronicling everything. In hindsight some events seem hazy and almost twilightzoneesque (unprotected sex, taking Xanax, the office party, the stalker) so it is nice to have a record of it all.

Now that it is all over and you can look back on your trip what is one piece of advice you would give to a first timer?

RE: Thailand challenge
Advice for a Thailand newbie? It might be hard to generalize In one piece but here are my two cents of some basics:
Girls are generally fairly easy. No need to resort to pros or shoring unless you enjoy the challenge (DVY did). Thai girls certainly like being led and the man making decisions. They are happy to go along and will insist you choose restaurants etc even if you have no clue and it is in their neighborhood where it would make more sense for them to recommend.
Do not confront girls, vendors etc in an aggressive way. Try to point out issues without them losing face. Do not underestimate the attachment a girl develops for you (or the value she places on developing a relationship, be it genuine or to profit from you), if she goes out with you she most likely wants something long-term even if she does not admit to it and will get pushy and stalky if you back off. Be prepared to change hotels.
Beware of a lot of foreigners in Thailand. Its raunchy reputation, cheapness and sleaze attract a lot of very odd people who you would not want near you at home. There are plenty of farang so choose your friends well.
Use thaifriendly etc for pipelining. It worked for me and can offer a good intro to girls who you would never meet in tourist areas.
Think long and hard (yes, intended) about safe sex. Girls will barely ever ask for a condom so you need to have the discipline to use one. Bring western condoms, the Thai ones I saw were horrid

RE: Thailand challenge
Postscript: Just when I thought I was done with Thailand and had escaped I received a picture in my email, showing the shopgirl with a newborn baby. Caption: "Soon I have, too". I always used condoms with her but what if she had manipulated them? I am trying to get ahold of her right now. The photo is her and her newborn nephew (see police hospital thread, even I cannot father kids that pop out in 3 weeks...) but the caption is unnerving. Could she have had baby rabies, trying to get pregnant the whole time? I really hope the caption is due to her lack of English skills or general hope and not based on a recent pregnancy test...
