Sad
Charles Haddon
On 20 August 2010, Charles Haddon, the lead singer of the band, died after a performance at Pukkelpop, Belgium. He committed suicide in the backstage artists' parking area. Haddon was reported to have been distressed after he feared he had seriously injured a young girl earlier after a stage dive.

RE: What are you listening to?
I'm getting to be an old man now, just drifting down memory lane. My best days behind me. Wanting to be a warrior still, but thinking better of it all and just getting the old affairs in order.

Then I dredge this one up from the memory bank:

I met Bobo many years back in London, in Stoke Newington in fact. They played to an audience of three. I was one of them. I fell in love.

I got to talk to Bobo after the gig. Her boyfriend, the guitarist was a seriously tasty looking geezer (meaning he looked like he could handle himself) and played with his shirt off. He was very gracious. He knew I wanted to fuck his girlfriend. But I guess he knew he was safe. And he was. I think he still plays guitar with her today.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobo_(singer)

I met a few interesting bands there around that time. It was when techno and acid house were really kicking off and everyone was going to raves and not looking at bands. Precious time.

She did some stuff with Rammstein as well.

This is where it gets weird though. They only had like 2/3 gigs in the UK and the next one was in a club called Xenon. It was a strictly jazz/funk/soul/R+B kind of thing. It was very exclusive. Not the sort of thing I thought they would do well at.

But I went to the show. My ex used to sing there all the time, being a main session singer for Jackson/Prince/Massive Attack/Donna Summer. I've mentioned her before here. Don't cut me down. I don't mean to be a tall poppy.

Anyway, I saw Bobo and her band. They were good, but it was just the wrong format. The people wanted funk and R and B. WTF that is. Oh and jazz.

I went up to them after and said hello. Man, they were defeated. Like htf could our manager book us here. It's one of those weird little triple coincidences that life throws up sometimes. No one ever played that club apart from session singers. In fact, it was known as 'Singers'. Weird.

I never got to bang Bobo, and she never got to be the pop star she deserved to be. A better voice than Bjork. And not so fucking annoying.

She made me feel like I was her new boyfriend for half an hour. But I bet she did that to all the boys. She was genuine. Just pure charisma.

Her music is shit hot. If I ever get my shit back together I'll get in touch with her one day. Or maybe not.

I'd love to produce her music, but by the sounds of it, she's doing just fine as she is, and even a superstar shit hot producer like me won't have much to offer her. She's the real deal. I'm still in love.

She doesn't look like she has aged one day from when I met her.

What do you think Bosch?

Don't talk, I'll believe it
Don't talk, listen to me instead
I know that if you think of it, both long enough and hard
The drink you drown your troubles in is the trouble you're in now
Talk talk talk about it, if you talk as if you care
But when your talk is over tilt that bottle in the air
Tossing back more than your share

Don't talk, I can guess it
Don't talk, well now you're restless
And you need somewhere to put the blame for how you feel inside
You'll look for a close and easy mark and you'll see me as fair game

Talk talk talk about it, you talk as if you care
But when your talk is over you tilt that bottle in the air
Tossing back more than your share
You talk talk talk about it, you talk as if you care
I'm marking every word and can tell this time for sure
Your talk is the finest I have heard

How your eyes they glow so fiercely I can tell you're inspired
By the name you just chose for me, now what was it? Oh, never mind it
We will talk talk talk about this when your head is clear
I'll discuss this in the morning, but until then you may talk but I won't hear

RE: What are you listening to?

I walked with Jesus and he would say
"Oh you poor child, you ain't comin' to me no way
You've found Heaven on Earth, gonna burn for your sin"
But I think I'll be in good company down there with all my friends
Well I got around to thinking 'bout what Jesus said to me
Cos if Heaven's like this, then that's the place for me
Long, long time between now and my death
And I gotta have my fun so I've chosen what's best
Well, here it comes
Here comes the sound
The sound of confusion
The sound of love
So listen sweet Lord, forgive me my sin
'Cos I can't stand this life without all of these things
Know I done wrong, but I've Heaven on Earth
Know I done wrong, but I could have done me worse
Well, here it comes
Here comes the sound
The sound of confusion
Well, here it comes
Here comes the sound
The sound of love
Here it comes
Here it comes
Here it comes
The sound of love
The sound of love
The sound of love
Jesus please meet me at the centre of the earth
Cos these wings are gonna fail me and I could have done me worse
Yeah I could have done me worse
Yeah I could have done me worse...

Love these Southern boys.

If you want to see how it's done, then take a look at this. This is a band in its prime. Before it's about to be struck down.

Little Ronnie Van Zant was only five foot something. But he could have a row if you wanted it. Chicken wire boogie.

This is a pretty famous concert where they blew the Stones off the stage at Knebworth, England. They came, they conquered. Fucking amazing.

It's only an hour long but enjoy! A Southern Boogie Rock Band on total form. Fucking devastating. The Stones would have drunk themselves to sleep that night.

Pure chemistry and hard work.

A year or so later he would die in a plane crash.

Five foot nothing. A brawler. A killer with the ladies.

Keep that in mind.

My favourite track from a classic fusion album; Passages with Frank Gambale. Probably the most technically gifted guitarist out there. It`s not only shredding here though, it`s great music also. (Love the keyboards here too.)

I cut to the chase and watched Free Bird.

Observations:

No one plays to the camera. They ignore it.

These dudes are who they are and aren't cultivating a brand.

They are so relaxed onstage. No show biz razzle dazzle.

I like the way the lead singer sort of roams around, drinking champagne, orchestrating the action, solos, ending, in a very organic way.

The bass player looks like he stole a bobbie's hat. No comment made, just wearing it.

You took me straight down nostalgia lane, and all this stuff we took for granted is pretty good, looking back, comparing to the self consciousness of today.

Their attitude seemed to be, we make music, and that is enough. No frills.

I also liked the supreme confidence of the band. No pyro or special lighting to start it out. No need to shoot their wad to prove themselves at the beginning of the song.

It is a full six minutes in before they start to cook, and until then it seems like a kind of mellow, relaxed, unfocused song.

They trust themselves to deliver and their audiences to hang in there, and it makes the explosion of guitar solos that much more effective because of the contrast.

Thanks, Rigs.

I like her. Good voice, great energy. She's not painfully-concerned enough to come anywhere near 10,000 Maniacs Level though.

That being said:

1) I completely-ripped off my lyrical style from Natalie Merchant. Ultra-precise lyrics, complete sentences, can be read as prose.

2) As a guitarist of limited ability, I have gotten more mileage out of the Dmaj7 chord (the second one in 'Don't Talk') than you'd ever possibly-imagine. It always sounds like a desert highway, open spaces.

3) That guitar solo at 3:58 is pathetic.* As such, it was one of the first guitar solos I could ever play, until I realised there was no point imitating anyone else.

* Admittedly, they'd just lost their lead guitarist.

Interesting.

No, I mean 'interesting'. Elucidate on the painfully-concerned comment if you can.

But never mind all that.

That whole American scene. I remember reading some comments from you about how you cringed looking back on some music you loved.

It made me think of that whole Australian scene. Well, just one band really. You know which one.

Such lefty bollocks. Or was it?

You mentioned R.E.M. as well. A band of pure genius. Then who really did sell out, man, in every sense of the word.

I think you mentioned New Order too. One of my favourite ever bands. About how bad it sounded. But you just need to listen with the right kind of ears. That shit is a third of a century old now.

This is my point:

Some people who make great music are arseholes.
Some people who make crap music are great guys.

The sands shift. Mores change. Personal morals change.

I have a soft spot for the Oil though. Peter was wearing a Sun-Orange shirt at Glastonbury, just my bro and me watching. The band were fucking tight - say what you like.

I'll never forget his words: "He seems like a man that knows where he's going". High praise.

It's a shame we don't have an arena to share our music - not just me and you, but all of us here at RVF. Personal shit, doxing shit, you know.

Here we are, connected, but yet we still can't make the final leap of intimacy, even within our relative anonymity.

Thanks for your words anyway. They brought a tear to my heart.

Ah, just got your 'painfully-concerned' comment. Gotcha! :-)

No need to explain. Unless you'd like to...

This is one fuck of a word salad of a post. I really shouldn't put it out there. Be gentle with me.

THEY ARE BETTER THAN THAT. THEY ARE UNLEASHED.
CAMERAS? THE CAMERAS ARE THERE TO OBSERVE THEM. NOT TO RULE THEM. TO BE USED AS EVIDENCE LATER AGAINST THEM. YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT THEY IGNORE THEM.

These dudes are who they are and aren't cultivating a brand.

DAMN RIGHT AGAIN. BORNE FROM THE BACK ROOMS OF BIKER DENS DOWN SOUTH. CHICKEN WIRE SO THEY DON'T GET BOTTLED TOO BAD. SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIALS. THE REAL DEAL. A GANG.

They are so relaxed onstage. No show biz razzle dazzle.

THEY PAID THEIR DUES. ROUGH AND READY. THEY DID THIS A MILLION TIMES BEFORE. WHY DID THEY DO IT? MONEY? NAH. GLORY? NAH? FOR THE KIDS? NAH. I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY DID IT. BUT I'M GLAD THEY DID.

I like the way the lead singer sort of roams around, drinking champagne, orchestrating the action, solos, ending, in a very organic way.

LITTLE RONNIE VAN ZANT. YEAH HE WORE A 'COWBOY HAT' - IT WASN'T TO MAKE HIMSELF SEEM TALLER. IT JUST LOOKED GOOD. WHAT A VOICE. I MEAN, WHAT A FUCKING VOICE. THE CROWD ARE GOING FUCKING APE SHIT BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T SEEN OR HEARD ANYTHING QUITE LIKE THAT. SURE THE STONES, ZEP YEAH YEAH, BUT THEY COULDN'T HOLD IT DOWN LIKE LITTLE RONNIE COULD. FORGED IN THE FIRES OF BACK ROOM BIKER BARS.

The bass player looks like he stole a bobbie's hat. No comment made, just wearing it.

HE WEARS IT WELL. HE DON'T GIVE A FUCK. NOT AFFECTED AT ALL. AU NATURALE. HE AIN'T NO UNDERCOVER LOVER!

You took me straight down nostalgia lane, and all this stuff we took for granted is pretty good, looking back, comparing to the self consciousness of today.

LOVE SEEING ALL THOSE BRIT BONGS IN TOTAL AWE OF NOT JUST AN AMERICAN BAND, BUT A GOOD OLD OLD BOYS FROM DOWN SOUTH AMERICAN BAND. AND ONE OF THEM WEARING A FUCKING BOBBIE'S HAT. SEEING STEVE GAINES BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE. I ALWAYS HAD A SOFT SPOT FOR THAT GUY, DON'T KNOW WHY. HIM AND HIS STRAT. HE WOULD DIE THE NEXT YEAR AS WELL. HIS SISTER DID BACKING VOX FOR THE BAND.

Their attitude seemed to be, we make music, and that is enough. No frills.

THEY ALL TOOK A HAND IN WRITING. IT WAS A PRETTY BIG BAND REALLY, BY TODAY'S STANDARDS ANYWAY. AN ENSEMBLE.

I also liked the supreme confidence of the band. No pyro or special lighting to start it out. No need to shoot their wad to prove themselves at the beginning of the song.

THE KIND OF CONFIDENCE THAT CAN ONLY COME BY PRIVATELY SHITTING YOUR PANTS PLAYING A HELL'S ANGEL'S B'DAY GIG, AND YOU BETTER NOT FUCK IT UP NOW. THEY KNEW THEY WERE WELL OUT OF BOTTLE'S WAY. IT WAS A PICNIC FOR THEM.

It is a full six minutes in before they start to cook, and until then it seems like a kind of mellow, relaxed, unfocused song.

YEAH, YOU GET IT. DAS RIGHT. JUST A COUPLE OF MINUTES TO HONE IN. THEN THE ROCKETS TAKE OFF. THEY'VE DONE THAT SHIT BEFORE.

They trust themselves to deliver and their audiences to hang in there, and it makes the explosion of guitar solos that much more effective because of the contrast.

THIS WAS A NEW GIG FOR THEM. AS MUCH AS IT WAS A TREAT FOR THE BRITISH AUDIENCE, I THINK THE SOUTHERN BOYS LIKED PLAYING TO A NEW AUDIENCE TOO. THEY'D PAID THEIR DUES, NOW THIS WAS THEIR REWARD. THEY DIDN'T HAM IT UP TOO MUCH, THEY DIDN'T LORD IT OVER THEM. HUMBLE STILL. I THINK THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES. ANOTHER BAND WOULD HAVE BEEN FUCK YEAH WORSHIP US. BUT LIKE YOU SAID, IT'S JUST PURE CONFIDENCE. QUIET CONFIDENCE. ALPHA.

Thanks, Rigs.

The sound quality trails off a bit at the end of the gig. But you can see from the crowd's reaction they are still on the boil.

So many baked brit bongs boogying down to bass players in bobby hats!

I never ever want to hear another whinge from anyone on this website about how they are not quite 6'5". This is how you own it motherfuckers. Five foot nothing. Do you think he ever deferred to anyone? Do you think any biker ever gave him shit? Do you think any woman didn't want to fuck him? Do you think any man didn't want to be his best buddy?

Alpha. That's how it's done. State of mind.

...

Saw Skynyrd doing 'call me the breeze' by jj there. 31:00 mins in.

Have this rare jj cale:

Jesus, it really is a Bobbie's hat as well isn't it.
