RE: My Personal Journey to Becoming a Moderate Social Drinker
Man I'm really enjoying this thread and can relate to both drinking too much and destructive physical behavior. I talked about my concerns with the effects my drinking might have caused here /thread-18604.html
Some good info in there. I've considered quitting in the past but like you BB decided I'd be better off controlling it. I definitely drink less than I did at 21 but I still drink too much and am going to curb it more. I would actually be ok with how much I drink when i go out for the most part but I need to stop drinking at home alone. Sometimes I think I drink alone because I'm bored and sometimes because I'm not happy with my current living situation and $$$ situation. I definetly drink to unwind after a long 12-16 hour shift at work but it shouldn't be one of the 1st things I do after getting home. Also a beer or screwdriver in the shower is not uncommon in the evening for me.

Just this past weekend I played poker for 14 hours at the casino and pretty much drank beers the whole time, had a blast... My game seems to be pretty good when drunk as I don't give 2 shits about anything and I guess I get an Alpha caveman style going as I had 1 dealer promising to bring me in a dinner the next night and one 8-9 waitress really let down her guard and started qualifying herself to me (again with cooking for me or something, idk can't remember, ha). So how was that dinner the waitress made for me? IDK cause I was in bed the whole next day with a shitty stomach and couldn't bring myself to make it to the casino.

The thing for me is I have fun getting drunk, even by myself. Or getting drunk makes things more fun...

I want to lower my alcohol intake for health reasons, $$$ reasons and because I have impressionable young family members around often.

So yeah I probably have some things to work through but enough about me. I really wanted to say I'm enjoying the thread, keep doing your thing and I'm looking forward to your next update. (Not trying to hijack your thread but this forum is starting to be therapeutic for me.

RE: My Personal Journey to Becoming a Moderate Social Drinker
This is long so TL;DR version = bump to see how BB is doing, I'm an alcoholic who went through an acute pancreatitis attack and trying to manage chronic pancreatitis...?

I'm bumping this thread because I was hoping to see an update from BB and to update my situation instead of making a whole new post. BB I hope your doing good man but your absence from this thread is most likely not a good sign.

So I pretty much kept drinking as I was for a week or so after my last post; couple screwdrivers after work, ton of beer while playing poker, etc. Now the thing is for a couple weeks to a month, maybe even longer I had been experiencing some sharp stomach pain off and on and my stomach felt like it was hardening a bit. I also remember having horrible indigestion one day while playing poker and I just attributed it to something I ate. Now I have always kind of had a sensitive stomach and I gained some weight recently so I attributed those ailments to these conditions. Well boy was I wrong...

I haven't been to a doctor due to not having health insurance but based off what I have read online (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pancrea...N=symptoms being 1 source) I believe I was having a bout of acute pancreatitis. This was about 3 weeks ago, it wasn't fun. I actually thought I was going through withdrawals for not drinking for 4 days or whatever it was. My body was going through hot/cold flashes with cold sweats, I had horrible diarreah every 20-40 minutes for 4-5 hours that was oily, smelly stools (steatorrhea). Trust me you'll know if you get this as it is FOUL. I was experiencing horrible, sharp pains in my abdomen that radiated around to my lower back, you literally can't get comfortable.

It was really bad for 1 day and pretty bad the next and then started to tamper down. I guess most people are hospitalized due to the pain, mine might have been a mild case but I'm pretty good with dealing with pain. On the other hand I probably should have been in the hospital so I could be NPO to give my pancreas a chance to recover.

Not to long after this I started to juice as a substitute for 1-2 meals a day in a bid to eat healthier and lose weight. I believe this has helped me a little bit in regards to this condition but I am still dealing with abdomen/lower back pain on an almost daily basis.

Based on what I've read a suggested diet for chronic pancreatitis is basically fruits, vegetables and fish. No sugar, no dairy, no caffeine, no meat, definetly no alcohol...

I drank 5 beers a couple days after this attack as a way to help with the withdrawals I thought I was experiencing. My plan was to implement a strict limit of 5 drinks a week so I could still go out and drink socially at events or dates. I went over that # probably having 8 at an engagement party but stopped myself from drinking more when I got home, 2 more beers after work another day and sipped 1 beer this past week while watching a sporting event, I drank a lot of water while sipping that last beer. The first week of trying to cut back was hard, I'm not gonna lie but now that I believe my condition to be worse than withdrawals and getting past that first stage of cutting back I haven't really been craving alcohol.

So I'm going to try to manage this myself through a better diet, I'm adding pancreas positive foods to my smoothies, and severly limiting my alcohol intake. I'm hoping the mild discomfort/pain I'm currently experiencing will go away after a couple weeks. I'm going to see how this goes and in the meantime I'm looking into possibly getting a new job with health insurance.

I've briefly chronicled my drinking past in a previous thread on this forum so why do I think I had this happen now? VODKA, I think primarily drinking vodka instead of beer was what finally pushed me over the edge. I'm sure my years of drinking played a part but I don't think it was a coincedence that I had this attack after 2-3 months of drinking vodka instead of beer.

Maybe I'll continue to update my situation in this thread but my advice to everyone here is to be careful and don't ignore any warning signs from your body. It sucks to think this might be something I have to manage the rest of my life. While it would suck to be the guy who can't have even a single drink I don't want to be checking out at 50 either.

I'm going to Mexico City for 9 days in a couple weeks and it will be weird/tough to not go out and get hammered and have a good time. Guess it will be a good opportunity to get used to sober gaming???

Hey, how much were you drinking on a regular basis prior to your bout of pancreatitis? It would help guys like me to figure out how far gone we are. Whenever I've had bad periods it's come down to vodka.

Update: Nevermind I saw on your other thread it was 80-100 beers a week. A bit of a higher clip than me, but not by as much as I'd like...

RE: My Personal Journey to Becoming a Moderate Social Drinker
I have being sober for 3 months now.

I still drink most nights - I just wanted to give up binge drinking and getting drunk.

I am confident that I will do it this time because the desire for getting fucked up has passed.

So - if you want to control your drinking (life is too short to give up the sweet subtle taste of bourbon) just keep trying. To paraphrase the IRA - no matter how many times you fail. You only have to get lucky once. And once you are on your way - the momentum should help keep you on the right path.

So - just keep trying until you get there. If you don't shoot you won't score...

RE: My Personal Journey to Becoming a Moderate Social Drinker
That 80-100 # was in my early 20's when I had a kegerator in my room and drank on average 5-6 nights a week till 2-5am. Honestly getting into smoking weed helped me scale it back plus I knew I was drinking too much and stopped drinking soo much as a crutch for being horrible socially. Past 5 years or so I'd say I was around the 20-40 range weekly???

edit - I also stopped drinking bud light/miller lite and started drinking higher alcohol content micro-brews so maybe that # is closer to 30-50?

While it's only been a couple weeks I'm confident I have it under control and am really just looking forward towards my future. Thing is I'm obviously worried about the damage I have done to my body.

I will definitely miss the drunken nights and drunken conversations with my boys. Overall I'm just hopeful I haven't done too much damage to my body and am able to still drink moderately in social situations.

RE: My Personal Journey to Becoming a Moderate Social Drinker
Saturday night, I drank for the first time in a few months, I get drunk 3-4 times a year.

I was up til 4am. Mike Tyson show + 19yo college girl. The next day sucked.

From now on, I will start drinking after lunch and be hammered by sunset.

I prefer to be drunk when the sun is high in the sky. Day drinking + Day gaming is a blast!

I like wine and I also like top shelf whiskey. I'm looking forward to drinking more often!

RE: My Personal Journey to Becoming a Moderate Social Drinker
I do love brunch. Always at home, never out at a restaurant!

In the winter time, I get up early and have oatmeal with berries and hot tea, then I get a little work done.

Around 11 or 12, I have my brunch...

Eggs, beans, avocado, bacon, corn tortillas, salsa.

Or,

Eggs, potatoes, bacon, beans, tortillas

Or,

A vegetable and cheese ommlette.

Then, I am ready to attack the day.

After a night of banging, I like to enjoy this meal with my lady.

G,

Do you like to drink during the day or do you keep strict vampire hours???

Only time I will drink during the day is 4 O'clock Fridays at The Del Mar Racetrack.

Otherwise, I am making money, working out, at the beach, swooping or sleeping during the day.

I don't like mixing Vodka and Milk.

Then when is Liner?

RE: My Personal Journey to Becoming a Moderate Social Drinker
Good luck bro, I sincerely wish the best for you. I approve of your approach as well. I also don't like the way AA goes about it and makes your feel like you are nothing and have no control over yourself.

I have a close friend going through a real struggle with alcohol right now as well. She's doing the program, but I'm pretty sure she's back to her old habits. She admitted to me that she had relapsed, but only a couple times. Yet when she picked me up at the airport two nights ago it took her an hour to find her way home when it should have taken 30 minutes max. She kept getting lost and seemed a little over enthusiastic. I noticed a change in her personality when she showed up the next day from work. Later than night she kept making excuses to leave for a couple minutes, like she had to go get cigs, or talk to her sister on the phone, or go to the bathroom. I asked our friend about it, if she thought it was suspicious and that maybe she was sneaking off to drink, and my friend said she thought the same thing and that she does that kind of thing all the time. The problem is, I've lived far away from her for a long time, and the only way I really know her is drunk, so it's hard for me to tell if she is sober or drunk. Also, the times we usually do see each other is only for a couple days or maybe a week at a time, so we are usually partying regardless just to celebrate being together. I never thought much of it until a mutual friend of ours confronted me about the problem. Not to mention she is a ditz to begin with and even when she is sober you would question if she was high or not.

Bottom line though, I think the program sucks and tries to make you feel low in a way. I also don't believe in the whole "spirituality" part. I do believe in spirituality, but not religion. They say that they don't do "religion" and focus on "spirituality," but let's be honest, they are pushing Christianity. I had to go to a couple meetings after I got a DUI, and they were reading out of the bible and talking lots of religious bullshit. I also felt like, "Man, these people are really fucked up, I shouldn't be in a meeting with these people." Some of their stories were so fucked up man, it was depressing.

But again, best of luck to you. It sounds like you are really set on it, and you seem like you have strong will power. You can do it man, just look forward and don't let anything or anyone stop you. Start doing other things to take your mind off drinking, which is sounds like you are trying to do. Day gaming sounds like a good option as well, which I read you wanted to get into. You got this man, keep up the good work!

Don't know if you were talking to the OP "BB" or me but I don't know too much about AA. Personally I'm able to have a drink or two and stop, I just prefer to get drunk as I have more fun. Don't get me wrong I've definitely over-done drinking in the past and it's gotten me into trouble a couple of times.

Overall it's just not worth it to me especially when my body is showing signs of damage from drinking. My stomach and everything already seems like its settling down so I think I'm going to be ok. I've had 1 beer in like 2 weeks or something, idk as I haven't really been keeping track. I will have a couple of beers in 10 days and then being on vacation in Mexico City will be the real experiment. Having plenty leisure time and $ to spend while going out to restaurants and bars, etc.

I will say that sipping my beer really seemed to help instead of gulping it down. If anyone has some questions or anything feel free to PM me.

The post was directed towards the OP, but good luck to you as well dude. Keep up the good work!

RE: My Personal Journey to Becoming a Moderate Social Drinker
JohnnyAppleSeeds (and anyone else) who may be having health problems from too much boozing, understand this: your liver function is the most important aspect of how your body handles alcohol. If you're gettting really bad hangovers and other bad health effects, you are drinking more alcohol than your liver can handle in a timely manner, allowing the alcohol to screw with the rest of your body.

Most people say the solution is to either quit drinking or dramatically cut back. That's all good, and if you're getting really sick and suffering DT's, you've clearly drank way too much booze in aggregate and developed a physical dependence.

But there is another side to this equation that almost never gets discussed - that would be improving your liver function.

I'm not one to drop links to my blog everywhere, but man, you need to check this recent post of mine:

http://hawaiianlibertarian.blogspot.com/...nergy.html

To put it simply, you can boost your liver function by eating lots of healthy saturated fats and the grand daddy of them all, coconut oil.

I'm not lying when I say it's been over 2 years since I've suffered a real hangover. I've been cooking with coconut oil every single day for that entire time. Oddly enough, I drink more now than ever before...because I can. Because I like a good buzz (though I hate getting drunk). But I can literally drink 8 beers and a dram or two of some Whiskey or Tequila (high end, top shelf stuff...I don't drink rot gut, which I'm sure does play a part in my alcohol tolerance), and wake up the next morning, bright, chipper, and ready to kick ass at whatever I got planned for the day.

But to cut to the chase - here are two pubmed articles from researchers studying the effects of dietary saturated fats on REVERSING liver damage.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=...9%3A547-54

"A diet enriched in saturated but not unsaturated fatty acids reversed alcoholic liver injury. This effect may be explained by down-regulation of lipid peroxidation."

And here's a pubmed article on research showing Coconut Oil protects the liver from alcohol damage:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=...9%3A338-43

I've been eating "paleo" more or less for 6 years now. But I only gradually became aware that my hangovers started being less frequent, less intense over that time - yet I was drinking more.

But when I started cooking with a combination of coconut oil AND kerry gold grass fed dairy butter at nearly every single meal, my tolerance for alcohol got scary (I can drink 12 drinks over a 4-5 hour period and still function close to normal), and my hangovers virtually disappeared.

For anyone reading this who's suffered bad health effects like a pancreatitis attack (like JohnnyAppleSeeds), I would suggest you give it a try - start cooking your food with high grade butter, and extra virgin coconut oil. Also, start regularly eating bone broth. Buy soup bones, boil them and make soup, stews or just drink like you would drink tea or coffee.

Fix your liver with the saturated fats, protect it with the MCT of coconut oil.

Your decision regarding your alcoholic consumption is up to you. Only you can determine if you need to quit or change your drinking habits...but better liver health and function would be beneficial and healing for any past damage you may have already done to it!

Stay thirsty, my friends. ;-)

I hope OP is doing ok.

As for me I think maybe I had food poisoning instead of a pancreatitis attack because I drank like a fish for the month I was in Mexico without any ill effects.

I still say to stay away from Vodka though. 90% of the patients I see in the hospital due to drinking drink Vodka.

RE: My Personal Journey to Becoming a Moderate Social Drinker
Yeah, I've got to start doing this. I can go months without the drink, but it's starting to get to the point where I need drinks to socialize.

I think my college friends really do not help with this, because all they do is get hammered as shit on the weekends and very little else. Fuck, last night I was drinking until 7 in the morning and I stumbled my ass home.

I figure it will be easier when I graduate because I'm more than likely not going to be anywhere near these people. My dad was an alcoholic, my uncle died from it, and most of my relatives were/are alcoholics.

I read on the last psychiatrist that a lot of toxic/neurotic people out there have this running in their heads.

Doing awesome is better than
Feeling sorry for yourself is better than
The mental work of actual change.

I know I'm one of those people. If I can't get my shit together, I'm going to get fucked like my old man.

For that matter, I really should quit smoking. Best thing to do, as far as I can tell from reading these boards, is to learn how to dance so then you don't have to drink much when you go out gaming.

I hope the OP got his drinking under control.
