I was thinking about this the other day. It seems like the dudes who have most preparations, the ones with the biggest stockpile of supplies, are just going to become the biggest targets.

How you fair in a disaster situation is probably going to be a function of where you happen to be when the shit hits the fan. After seeing the traffic out of DC in a regular Friday afternoon I can only imagine what it would be like in a legit evacuation. I wouldn't even try to leave. I'd just sit tight and try to bang a few of my neighbors.

I'd live and let live. Stay home, read about what others are doing on the Internet(while electricity is still running) and just kick back and watch the show. If it's something really big like an asteroid strike, I'd probably go to the tallest bare hill around with a baseball bat and crack jokes with a couple friends about how I'll try to hit it out of the park when it passes over.

On the bright side, at least you'd have a funny story to tell when you arrive at Heaven's Gate Airport.
Other Passenger: "Hey man, what did you do in your final moments before it hit?"
Me: "I tried to hit a home run. Unfortunately, I'm shit at hitting curve balls. How about you?"
Other Passenger: "Ehh... I just broke down and cried..."

Stockpile books, food, clean water, guns, ammo and medication.

Books would become a top form of currency. Medical, gardening, survival, etc. would be worth more than almost anything.

I know we're joking around here but in our lifetimes, there will be countries where the shit hits the fan.

I think the most important thing is having currency on hand. It won't happen that currency is worthless overnight, and gold, while a good long-term investment, will not be easily exchanged in SHTF scenarios. Have a stack of currency at home and a month of canned food.

There used to be a TV show called Jericho about a post-apocalyptic USA. In the show, bullets became one of the only forms of currency since you could always kill someone with a gun and take their supplies, so bullets became extremely valuable.

There will be four essential camps:

1. High T dudes are going to be going at it like its the wild west. They have little interest in the future and will resort to violence to scare away competing access to resources. A knife is a weapon of intimidation, a hammer is a good way to break into a house. Easily spotted, will prefer gangsta inspired flashy ornamentation. Think all the guys in sports, urban guys, punk teenagers, etc. Will constantly fight out a hierarchy.

2. Other dudes have prepared supplies and/or social connections to resources. But our current landscape is so broken up (think suburbia) that they will be essentially alone or alone with family for quite a while, until they distinguish a good area of town to mobilize with other socially constructive men. If they try to avoid confrontation and don't talk the talk or shoot the shit, other men will suspect their avoidance as a sign that they are protecting a nest of resources. Their only choice is to sit on their stash or to sense demands in the bartering market, hoping to make stock-like trades by imagining where future resource demand will go. Think day traders or bazaar merchants. A knife or hammer is an object of trade, to be traded for useless luxuries that will one day be in demand again.

3. Other men will launch into a modern version of an artisan / hunter. These guys have a skill that can sustain themselves via direct resource gathering or by producing value for others who will trade with them. Knives and hammers are tools to butcher meat, build shelter, or occasionally defend against an interloper.

4. Everyone else: elderly men will have to offer themselves as part of a younger man's enterprise, either in a skill or as a watchman. Elderly women will be royally fucked and turned into beggars unless they are part of a strong family. Single women will end up in harems, married fast, or latched on to existing families trying to get pity resources (or the occasional mistress exchange)

1a. In the first case, you will survive if you are the biggest baddest most diabolical leader. It will take serious ballsy fortitude to stay in power long enough to build a permanent reputation (like tribal tenure). Once you have a swarm of reliable men around you, though, you can pursue any path you want. Order them to build a town or to sack and pillage it and they will. Women will flock naturally.

2a. In the second case, you will survive if you can defend your surplus well. Men will join you for resources but, with no moral obligation, will flake often . Better to go it alone. You will thrive if you learn to trade one hammer for 20 pairs of wonderbras, for example. Women will want some of your resources.

3a. In the third case, you will sustain yourself naturally with your skill. But you will have to put in overtime to gain enough flashy resources to attract women. You will thrive by finding similarly motivated men and by pooling into an active community. Women will flock to gain protection or a husband within the single artisans.

4a. Elderly will survive and thrive if they have infrastructural skill. Cook for the family. Build stuff for the actual earners. Single women will survive by being hot and virginal or by finding a husband.

Anyone else find this shit super interesting? Maybe it's why I like The Walking Dead so much. Although, living during a zombie apocalypse is probably much less awesome than the fantasy I have built up in my head lol.
