I have thinning hair, a larger nose and point ears. When I first noticed I was losing my hair, I freaked out and I tried shaving my head...was 50/50 between chicks who loved rubbing my head and some who thought I looked like a cancer patient. Looking back at pics of myself, I don't think I liked that look.

That was 3-4 years ago and I'm getting the receding hairline at an even more pronounced rate. Now, I go to a stylist, not a barber, and he cuts my hair quite short in such a way as to disguise it fairly well. I know that I can't keep it up forever, so I'm wondering what to do in the future. I am thinking of growing it out one last time just for kicks, even though I'll look like a bit of a sleazebag (think Jason Clarke in Zero Dark Thirty)

But when I finally lose it all, I may just keep the horseshoe. Rocking the shaved head nowadays pretty much means your bald, and I don't like so great with the chrome dome. Why not just embrace it?

Big update. I shaved my head around Christmastime, and have been keeping it completely shaved (not even stubble). Two big things I've noticed.
The first is that chicks who are more into openly dominant guys are more open to it if you can pull off that angle effectively--that's the key. Since I've also been lifting hard, adding mass, and still have a goatee, I look a bit mean, which works well for those who DO like the look. Ultimately that's been the key I think--keeping the look. My game is relatively informal, very relaxed, I don't do as much of the stuff as someone like Hearstie, but it still helps for the times when I do go asshole, and gives an impression of dominance.
The second is that you're simply more distinctive. You stand out. Most girls you might get a -0.5, but the ones who like it will be more receptive. You have to rock the entire angle with it, which can suck because it can, to a degree, box you into a corner with the game style you can run. If you run cool interesting artsy guy game long hair might be better. You can't do the "all American jock" look at all. But I personally prefer the distinctiveness--out of the social groups I'm running with, being a bit tall (6'1") and using the entire look overall, I do stand out a bit. And in an area where the ratios are bad, that seems to be a necessity for survival.
Game style, as I said, seems to be better when I steer gently into the look and overall impression. No big surprise there.

Took a LOT of will to do it. I literally couldn't do it until I ran the buzzer once through and cut off a giant hunk of hair and it was like "fuck I gotta do it now". But since I had a really distinctive widows peak and parting in the middle wasn't cutting it, it became a necessity. I think I might grow it out some later, but for now, I'm likin' the look. If anything the hair in the middle is growing back thicker. So it's an option, though it's a very distinct change and not good for everyone.

FYI I have a fairly rounded face, although losing weight's making it a bit more angular, and a fairly thick goatee.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I wish I could ask them why they are doing it, but it seems very awkward to call people out on their body language, strangers especially, and it's not like they'll give honest answers anyway.

I'm talking about strangers: a woman in a grocery store, notices you, maybe from 30' away, and fixes her hair REALLY fast. Or I get into the elevator, and a dude is already there. He immediately fixes his emo fringe, not trying to hide it.

From what I understand, preening is a calming behavior (They worry about how they look, and fixing their hair, etc. calms them). However, I doubt that all of the guys that I see fixing their hair are gays.

This is something I did not expect to see when I shaved my head.

It depends. I think if you're just bald and not in decent shape you just look weird. I don't know many fat or out of shape dudes who rock the bald look well.

There are a bunch of dudes on RVF who are bald but they're all in above average shape as indicated by big arms, v-tapers or other signals.

Personally, I think shaving my head was one of the best moves I made for my look.
I have a baby face but now that I shave my head and rock some stubble I don't get bothered about my age anymore.

Baldness is polarizing and fits the rest of my understated look well. Many girls assume I'm a trainer, boxer, military dude or athlete. I think they're all great things to be associated with in this day and age of pussification.

What's funny is that many girls can't tell that I didn't choose the bald look. I was balding at a young age and really had no choice. I guess I am lucky that my head shape is good for bald though.

I have friends who went the hair plug route and then gave up and went bald and they all agree that it definitely changes the way people view you. I get clowned a whole lot less now that I've put on some mass and gone bald.

I agree. The shaved head look is so easy to blow:

Minor and otherwise less important things start to make a big difference: glasses, cranium size, jaw width, leanness, muscles, nose length, nasolabial folds, ears, neck width

Baldness is all about confidence. If you own it and don't give a fuck what anyone says you'll be fine. My buddy went bald at 20... not even any stubble. He is 40 lbs overweight, not the best looking guy but confident as fuck. He slayed pussy while young and married a pretty girl and now has a six digit income. He used his baldness and a doofy sense of humor, combined with confidence and an annoying level of aloofness to his advantage. I have never seen better game in my life.

I started shaving my head - full shave (with electric trimmer or shaver) or trimmed up to around 3 mm - in my early 20s, which was actually a few years before I started balding naturally. I've been doing the same for 20 years now and haven't spent a day in my life worrying about whatever negative impacts balding is thought to have on men's lives.
I stick to the same shave for my face these days. I occasionally experiment a little with beard length, but I generally feel I look better - and these days also a bit younger - with a few millimeters of hair maximum on head and face.
Basically the Jason Statham approach.

Stay in good shape, have a masculine style and I really don't think going bald - and then either shave it completely down or keep it extremely short - is anything whatsoever to worry about. Of course some people are a little more fortunate with their head and face shape than others for this look (I'm probably somewhere in the middle on that scale), but we obviously all have to try to optimize our look to within our genetic abilities.

Confidence helps obviously, but it's not like you are trading looks for confidence. The opposite actually. You are the same you, and it's actually easier to be confident when you do look good.

I mean, if you're going to let yourself go bald without getting in better shape and improving your fashion, then you're going to look like a dad or something.

That look is fine if you're not trying to fuck, but this is a forum about fucking.

I never actually saw bald as bad. I saw balding as bad since it shows you can't let go of something that is already gone. I just see bald as another hairstyle.

It's polarizing but some girls love it. I also do think it makes you look tougher and more confident. Many girls I meet are surprised to find out I'm an introvert once they get to know me. I just have a confident vibe. My haircut isn't the reason but I do think losing my hair forced me to improve many aspects of myself out of initial anxiety.
