I would recommend Goiania or Belo Horizonte. They are safer, cleaner and have friendly girls. Especially if you have 6 weeks. Minas isn't too far from Rio. Check out Visconde De Maua if you have time.

I've spent the last few weeks hanging out in Curitiba PR and Florianopolis SC. My local Brazilian friends here all strongly advised me to not to go Rio right now or at least spend less time there. It's a complicated time for the Cariocas and the military have been deployed to help police the city as previously mentioned. Favela thugs seem to be running amok and robberies are going down in broad day light judging from the MSM local news.

Obviously normal common travel sense and security precautions apply, even in the supposed "rich" and "safe" zones to the south. I don't buy into the fear-mongering but having said that, when even locals / nationals who know about the situation more than me give advice, I listen. Will reduce time spend from originally planned 3 weeks to 10 days in March.

Kind of like how I wanted to go to Venezuela, but all the refugees and expats I met from there advised me not to.

I have 6 weeks in Brazil and would like to spend 2 traveling a little and 4 living somewhere.

In Rio and it doesn't seem really dangerous if you keep your eyes open and stick to the downtown areas like Ipanema and Leblon. There are a bunch of cops walking around and lots of people using their phones on the street.

Outside of those areas it gets more dangerous.

Also has anyone tried online in Rio, i.e. Tinder? I have never experienced a higher flake rate in any other countries I've ever been in (including in Asia, West/East Europe, America). Out of 9 girls who agreed to meet in Leblon for a drink, on WhatsApp, with half of them confirming just a few hours before, 7 flaked, 1 showed up, another changed plans and told me to meet her with her friends.

From what I've seen so far (about 10 days) and other forum members, I think online has completely tanked in this city, and approaching in person (like many other places) is the way to go.

What the fuck, was this near the border of Ipanema/Leblon? It looked sorta dodgy at night but I would expect something like this to occur in another neighbourhood. Caveat I haven't been here very long so I might have been lucky so far.
