Women M.B.A.'s Dropping Out of Workforce
Women M.B.A.'s Drop Out of Workforce

Fifteen years after graduating from Harvard College, 28 percent of the women who went on to get MBAs were stay-at-home moms. ... The common factors: being married, being female, becoming a mother. ... Notably, 42 percent of the sample group held the same graduate degree as their husbands. ... Women are less likely to work the more their husbands make.

I'll let the forum comment on the double standard of women wanting respect, but not actually getting real careers. Many marry a more successful male classmate.

This also seems to be a concern for school admissions, if they want successful alums.

"But while our survey suggests that working women believe staying at home would be a luxury, Roney points out that the economy could be keeping their dreams from taking off. “It’s especially crippling to see women’s sense that, if it weren’t for the economy,” they might be able to realize these dreams.”

As one (working) mom of two told me, she may dream of leaving work to take care of her kids, but the (financial) reality of it is not so ideal. “Sure, if my husband made so much money that I could spend time with the kids, still afford great vacations and maybe the occasional baby sitter to take a class or go out with friends, I’d be the first to sign up"

First it's men's fault they can't live the dream, now it's the economy's.

This doesn't surprise me at all. I think more than 2/3rds of all Harvard MBA grads eventually go to work for investment banks. May as well call it Maters in Investment Banking, to be honest. There's another thread talking about the insane hours involved in this profession.

Anyway, as far as not having enough money to stop working is concerned. A lot of upper middle income women are their own worst enemy, usually insisting that the family buy a much more expensive house to live in than they realistically need. And the rest of their costs follow from the level set by the house/neighbourhood. It's no wonder they cant keep up.

More women should work in the financial district, because so many of them are HOT! I've seen way more hotter chicks during the rush hour than anytime else on the street.

Those are recent grads. Give it a year, then they'll get banker butt.

Are these secretary/clerical assistants? Or are these professionals with relevant college/graduate degrees?

From the sample of MBA and law school graduates I know, this is the case. One Stanford MBA is sitting at home, but her husband also a Stanford MBA is a VC in Silicon Valley. Another stay at home MBA mom is married to a heart surgeon. And my non practicing Ivy League lawyer cousin is married to a Wall Street guy.

Most of them are recent grads and clerical assistants, very few of them are higher up!
