Modern medicine: Lab-grown genitals, spray-on skin

A few years ago, Dr. Anthony Atala’s lab at Wake Forest University got good at making ears. They were growing new ears on a scaffold using patient's cells, because so many soldiers were losing their ears in explosions. Now the Department of Defense has a project that’s closer to Atala’s heart: making new genitals for soldiers who have stepped on bombs.

Other labs are still moving forward with the ear project for the military. But Atala has special expertise dating back to his days as a pediatric urologist. He’s already grown bladders using a patient’s own cells, and he’s made penises that rabbits were able to put to their proper use, fathering litters of new little bunnies. He hopes to use this expertise to help rebuild the bodies of veterans wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as men and boys injured in car accidents.

Atala is one of the pioneers of regenerative medicine. But the field has taken off in a big way, attracting biotechnology companies, the U.S. military and academic labs, which are working to literally make the blind see and the lame walk again. They’re perfecting spray-on skin and aim to mass-produce new body parts using bioprinters based on the jet printers attached to your home computer.

“Right now, the way these organs are made is creating them one by one. By bringing the bioprinting in, we can scale it up,” says Atala, whose lab has contracts with the four-year-old Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM), biotechnology companies and private foundations.

All of this technology is years away from the doctor's office. The most advanced treatments have just begun the very earliest stages of human testing. But all evidence points to the tantalizing prospect of grow-your-own organs and possibly even limbs within a decade or so, and some approaches, such as muscle transplants and spray-on skin, are helping a lucky few now.

I respect that the work they're doing in creating these new organs is specifically geared towards repairing the bodies of soldiers maimed in warfare.

A few years ago a co-worker recommended a book to me called "House to House" by David Bellavia, about his experiences during the battle of Fallujah. One of the members of his squad had a padlock embedded in his penis after an explosion. Poor guy. If I lost my penis I'd probably commit suicide.

I suspect that the soldiers in Iraq/Afghanistan are just a cover up. Maybe the doctors have good intentions but the people who are funding this have others.

If they could grow a dick for someone who lost it in a bomb accident and replace it then they can also grow a dick for a perfectly healthy person with a small one and replace that one with a dick that's a couple inches bigger. It would be a lot easier to do then replace someones junk that got blown off.

In a hundred years, being small is just for the poor.

I was listening to a show the other day and some people are injecting inferior oil into their penis to make it larger.

I don't think that would be that much of a problem.

Some breast implants make breasts feel a little harder compared to real breasts and some guys don't like that. But the main purpose of fake breasts is to look good - which works because guys are visual creatures.

For girls - as long as it's hard, big, and shoots - I think women won't care either way. They like dicks, they like dildos, and they like vibrators. Women are not exactly discriminating against what they take in as long as it makes them feel good.

Don't get too excited about this yet. Whole-organ tissue engineering definitely has potential and we may all end up with a freezer full of custom-made spare parts at some point in the future, but right now the science is simply not there. Even growing the simplest organs like bladders has had unanticipated problems that presented themselves when transplanted into real people (as a rule, medical articles in the popular press tend to suppress a lot of technical limitations and present a rosier, more hyped-up picture than is really justified). I'd estimate that any significant amount of clinical application for engineered whole organs is 10 years away at an absolute minimum.

I've believed for years that the future of the human race is enhancements through pharmaceuticals, genetic engineering, bionics, transplants grown in labs, etc.

People will be able to function at much higher levels, be healthier, and live longer. But -for a long time this will be available only to the wealthy, just as now cosmetic surgery is largely a luxury of the affluent. The poorer people will be left behind to such an extent that the human race may diverge into two different races, at least in a social and political sense.

You will NOT want to be part of the "unenhanced" class. I agree these future advantages are one of the best reasons to strive for wealth.

Above average sex skill > above average penis

This will have the biggest (lol) impact on those who are noticably small. But women's vaginas are already evolved to take the average penis (5-6"). How you seduce her and how you lay her out in sex are always going to be paramount.

Not saying this won't have an impact, but I doubt it will be revolutionary. We have fake tits, but men are still going for fatties with big boobs...
