I use the writer one too and I'm not even lying but when they ask me the title of the book I clam up and usually say "that's a secret" or " I've written a very controversial book on traveling, maybe i'll tell you later"

Needless, to say that it's not really working out.

Need a better solution.

I've been telling chicks I'm coaching the Women's U.S. Skeeball Team for competition in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

I've also used Dream Analyzer. Great way to get some crazy/interesting conversations going if they play along.

Both of these are field tested and have NEVER failed at getting a laugh or follow-up comment.



EDIT: If they nag me about what my job really is, I say "I shape the lives & minds of female urban youth" aka I teach a bunch of girls in the city.

Depends on the girl. Usually don't want to talk about it, but something like Independent Contractor, Nuclear Power, train dolphins for the military (which I stole from someone here, brilliant).

sometimes I say "I work with my hands"

they say "really? doing what?"

I say "I use my hands to type on a computer"

they laugh and then I change the subject.

so I don't think you need a fake job, you just need a non-boring way of filling the air when she asks what you do.
