I have heard rumblings of this trend before. One theory behind it basically posits that younger girls are actually starting to rebel a bit by rejecting the ideology their mothers (the leaders of the sexual revolution) and keeping their legs closed a little more.

I don't know if I buy it (haven't seen much evidence for it and what I see anecdotally seems to rule it out), but I can't be sure. It isn't implausible I guess, especially with the rise of conservatism in America (to be driven further in coming years by higher conservative fertility rates).

When I was in high school here in Toronto everybody was getting laid. If you had friends and could laugh at anything you would've gotten laid. If you were socially awkward or weird then you might have had to work hard at it a bit but everybody got laid in high school eventually. Some reasons for this could be:

• lying- girls are definitely capable of lying on surveys
• overweight/obese girls who can't find a partner or refuse to lower standards
• increased polarization of sexual habits. Girls who lean on the slutty side are getting sluttier, while girls who don't are getting laid even less. The amount of sex happening could be increasing while the number of participants go down.

from my knowledge there is a decent percentage of college virgins out there (SIGNIFICANTLY less than one third).... the catch is that the percentage of these girls who are attractive is basically non existent.

99.9% of attractive girls who goes to college are indoctrinated into the cock carousel either through greek life (they all want desperately to fit in and climb the social ladder, they can't help it) or through the living conditions on/off campus.

yeah there were some notorious technical virgins in my high school days. the president of the school handed out blowjobs to football players like it was her sole duty in life. Agreed. I grew up in a relatively conservative community in the Bible belt. A lot of women were "saving themselves for their husbands." The super churches in the area encouraged girls to sign virginity pledges. But that didn't stop the majority of them (at least the attractive ones) from being total whores. Yeah, I think that for every cock carousel rider out there, there's at least two carousel watchers. Is she a 5 or above?

In all fairness, I know a few girls who were certainly north of 5 on the rating scale (some solids 7s and 8s, actually) and were virgins following their 18th birthday. Several of them lost it within their first two years in college...some may still not have done so. Even the ones who have have not been taking too many dicks (a bf and 1 or 2 exclusive steady hookups so far in the case of many). There is a visible subset of girls who get around a lot, but most seem pretty choosy about who they let in and, apparently, not a lot of dudes make their cut.

Granted, my school is an Ivy, which means it is full of bright but socially inexperienced, relatively awkward nerds who have historically been a bit too academically conscientious to devote much time to the mating game. We've also got a disproportionately large number of "aspies", or folks who behave like aspies. Finally, there are quite a few religious girls here, many more than you'd expect to find at such a school.

Regardless, I'm certain that this situation wouldn't follow at your more standard university (public or private). In the case of other highly selective schools (Stanford, MIT, other Ivies, etc) and some of our nation's more religious institutions (ex: BYU, Liberty U, Bob Jones U, Oral Roberts, etc), the situation might be closer to what I described and to what the article in the OP hints at.
