Job = reason to move?
My hometown is best and biggest city in my country and I have everything here: big social circle, great flat, lots of chicks to fuck (locals and tourist), great food, etc.
The problem is that there are hardly any jobs in my field of expertise and that career chances in general are kinda slim. Hence, Im considering to apply and eventually get a promising job in another city. Im struggling with this decision, since right now my city is THE place to be in almost any regard, just not job-wise.

Would you do it?

Can you give us more details? I mean no one is going to know your name, number, address and social security number from you divulging your city... There is a book called "who's your city?" that talks about this very subject, but then again im not going to divulge any more details because you might have TOO much information about me...

Well, my city is Berlin and my country Germany. I wanted it to be a general question and therefore kept the details kinda vague. Anyhow, thanks for that book recommendation. Im going to look into that.

Do you want to do something very specialized? Hard to believe Berlin doesn't have options.

There are some options, but very few and the pay is considerably lower than in any other German city.

Anything can be a reason to move if you think you'll be happier elsewhere.

How long is a train ride from Munich or Frankfurt to Berlin?

Have you considered living and working in Frankfurt, but spending weekends in Berlin? I have never been to either city but if you like Berlin and don't want to leave your social circle, you might be able to find a job close enough to where you can still touch your toes down in Berlin every once in a while.

Moving out of my home town, as nice as it was, really made me grow socially as a person. For the first time in my life I was forced to develop a social circle from scratch, in a bit of a shitty town to do it in. You can always come back Wink

Ive lived in a couple of place within Germany and overseas, so its not like Im afraid of doing it again. Its more about making a carreer move or not. There are certainly jobs in Berlin I could do, but if you really want to get to places in my area of interest, Berlin is not really a good point to start since opportunities are scarce. All the major industries and most of the big players are located elsewhere in Germany.

RE: Job = reason to move?
Even though Berlin has an awesome reputation right now as a great place to live it wouldn't hurt you to get out of your comfort zone. I've moved around a lot and find it always improves by skillset and general well-being. Even if, technically, some of the places are not the greatest in the world.

The idea is really to challenge yourself. If you've always lived in Berlin you could easily have reached a plateau there already. What about considering moving out of Germany altogether? Seem to be a lot of Germans in South Africa, especially Cape Town. Often older rich retired people, but I've seen younger people living here too. The world is bigger than Berlin.

I suggest you read the 4-hour work week, and the millionaires fastlane, those are two great books to get you started on gaining your freedom. The best way to work is be your own boss and work on your own terms, an Entreprenuer and Internet Marketers are great examples. We live in a society with the internet and there are great oppurtunities for you to make money online. Jobs/careers are overrated.

This is a question that you can only ask yourself. You have to know your CURRENT life purpose is in order to answer this question properly. What is your ultimate goal in life right now? will relocating to another city for a job line up with your primary goals? For example- if what you care about most right now is traveling, and you want to save up money for your trip (and if you want to travel on a budget), then moving to another city for the sake of a well paying job would be worth it.

If you're only moving for the sake of getting a job just because you want money, then it would be pointless to move.

RE: Job = reason to move?
@Travolta: Yeah, that makes sense. Still have to figure out, what my ultimate goal is and how I can make a living while achieving it.

@Hussar: I know man and I would relocate internationally, but carreer-wise its best to first gain some experience in Germany and then get a German company to send you abroad, with a German contract.
