He starts by:

1. Aging (34) and subsequently performing poorly, instilling in league officials the fear that he may not have much left in the tank.
This is the most crucial factor, as it kept teams from investing much in Chad Johnson since they figured he may not have had much to give. That lack of investment made him easier to cut should he have done anything wrong.
His contract was for near the league minimum for a player his age (about $925,000). There were no guarantees in it (ex: no signing bonus), and it was incentive laden (just over $1 million in incentives).

Some agents call this a "prove it" contract, the type given to players who officials have reason to doubt can still perform or stay out of trouble (or both). For teams, this is about minimal investment in risky assets. The player can earn quite a bit if he does well thanks to the incentives, but the lack of guarantees (which the team would be on the hook for no matter how he does) gives the team an easy way out. They can cut the guy with no consequences for the slightest thing (ex: hitting your wife, getting arrested)-the guy is essentially on probation.

2. Being a generally controversial figure that can cause problems in the union between franchise and public. Domestic violence is something that tends to create PR issues, even if the woman in question (arguably a hoodrat with anger management issues of her own) may have provoked it.
Teams may tolerate this from some players, but not when factor 1 is in play. That guy isn't worth the trouble in their eyes.

These two things conspired to put Chad Johnson on fairly thin ice, and usher him out of Miami early.

I am skeptical as to his chances of coming back into the league. He may want to talk to the UFL, which could give him a springboard back into the NFL by midseason. I do not think he has the time to jump into another NFL camp and stick at the moment.

No-one here in Cincinnati is surprised. Chad used to play for our Bengals, and it's a common joke among the city populace about what a group of convicts the NFL team comprises.

He and his wife also lost their VH1 show.

To add to what has already been said, it's possible that he could face suspension from the league. They have taken a zero tolerance policy toward their players getting into legal trouble. I haven't heard or read anything to suggest that the league would be getting involved, but it is certainly a possibility.

All they need is the flimsiest of excuses. There is very little room for error on "prove-it" contracts like these. The team has nothing to lose by cutting you.
There are 3-5 undrafted free agents ready to take his place and play for half the price of the old, risky veteran whose best days are behind him. Its sink or swim with these guys-no middle ground. Chad sank.

Talent and experience are always valuable in the NFL. Somebody will sign him .....likely later on when the thing dies down.

While Chad has been a character in the past, he's never been a locker room cancer type. No scrapes with the law. He's been the kind of guy that actually had fun doing what he's doing. Yes, he drew attention to himself, but he also BALLED in Cincinnati. He was among the elite receivers in the league. But yeah, his production has fallen off, though I don't believe he's physically deteriorated much. He knew he was on a short leash in Miami. He started out by dropping a bunch of F-Bombs in a press conference (though he was only joking, being Chad), and the coach wasn't crazy about that. Then this. Word is this trick already filed for divorce. Men in general shouldn't let these attention-whoring tricks pull them into this reality show nonsense. She may very well have gotten up in his face, like these type of women are known to do, and he may very well have banged heads with her unintentionally. But if there's an injury, and she calls the cops, you're going to jail and she gets to play victim. I've always like Chad, but he made a bunch of mistakes with this one. The difference between him and T.O. is that Owens is a CANCER to his teams. He draws attention not by having a good time and clowning, but by actually separating himself from teammates and throwing them under the bus publicly. He's arrogant in a way that Chad has never been. Unfortunately, he's also more physically imposing than Chad and in incredible shape, but he'll destroy your locker room. Chad has never been that guy.

Doesn't anyone else think it's a bit strange calling a football team the DOLPHINS. Not that it's biologically accurate, but most people see dolphins as cute friendly animals who are kind to humans. Kind of the Beta's of the sea.

You'd think a football team would want to appear fearsome. Should have called themselves the SHARKS, not the Dolphins.

Why would a famous NFL player marry some groupie who is WELL past her prime? Some of these dudes still think that they are broke teens living in the ghetto, like they were before they made it big. I really think that he is A) Retarded, or B) Drawn to drama.

There is no fucking way that I would MARRY a chick whose entire self worth and identity is wrapped around how much NBA/NFL cock she gobbled in her early years. No Homo, but Chad is a really good looking dude. Even if he wasn't in the NFL he could pull a chick as fine or better than his future ex-wife.
